number is important or compatible birth element is more important between the spouses. And the elements should follow a

I find that normally for this, the compatibility of the pillars does tell a great deal. More then the kua, or even the birth element.

Normally, it should be such that they can draw strength from each other or simply use a binding element to smooth the relationship.
However, you should also take note that due to education and modern society, there are also other ways such as counselling which a couple could take up in order to reduce conflicts.
So far, most of what I see is that no matter what kind of combination, so long as a proper binding element exists, the relationship is often good.
