Staff Cecil Lee Posted August 9, 2009 Staff Share Posted August 9, 2009 1. The act of giving shoes is a tradition in China, much like the custom of avoiding giving clocks or bells as gifts. 2. However, considering these shoes are "old", there may be some flexibility in how we perceive them as gifts. It could be seen more as a kind gesture rather than a traditional gift. 3. For individuals of other ethnicities, this may not be a concern, as there is no obligation to adhere to customs of a different culture. 4. I recall a time, many years ago, even in a predominantly Chinese community, where there was a promotion to purchase a new pair of branded sports shoes at a discount by bringing in an old pair to either recycle or donate to those in need in another country. 5. As long as one's intentions are sincere and heartfelt, I believe this type of behavior is perfectly acceptable. Many Chinese families have a practice of passing down clothing from older siblings or cousins to younger children, so it would be a shame to waste shoes that are still in good condition.
