myfs_154365
Hi,I am a Chinese American female and have been living in the U.S. most of my life. I've always used my Chinese name in school, work, and all aspects of my life. I never liked my Chinese name because people would make fun of it, mispronounce it, forget it easily, or not bother to acknowledge me because my name is so different to remember/pronounce. However, it's been very hard for me to choose a Western/American name I feel comfortable with.My current Chinese name is Zhu (Pearl - ) Hua (Flower - ). My lucky element is wood and I've done a lot of research in regards to the letter I should begin my English name with (k, g, z according to certain websites), a name meaning wood/flower/spring, and the letters adding up to 5 or 6.Would you please let me know if this conclusion is correct? And would you please give me some advice on how to pick out a good American name?Thank you!
Staff Cecil Lee Posted March 6, 2012 Staff Share Posted March 6, 2012 1. Please see this illustration of someone else's chart relating to name selection:- Your Five Element Breakdown 3 Strongest Water 3 Strong Wood 3 Extremely Weak Fire 2 Weakest Earth 1 Weak Metal 40% 32% 8% 10% 8% This tells me that you are a Weak Fire because of too little Fire (8%). Your element is born in a season which is makes Fire Element Extremely Weak. Thus, influencing the element strength of the other five element elements. The percentage of each element is considered after considering the seasonal strength and the number of that element present. Thus, your favourable elements are Wood (32%) and Fire (8%) Elements. Metal (8%) is your wealth element. However, as you are a Weak Fire, you first need to be stronger in order to control your wealth element. Based on the percentage of the Five Element of each of your favourable element. You should attempt to enhance the favourable element with least percentage, followed by the favourable element with the next lowest percentage. As Weak Fire, your favourable elements are Wood (32%) / Fire (8%) . Fire (8%) is your most favourable element. Wood (32%) is your next most favourable element. As you have a lot of Wood, having more won't benefit you any more. Your unfavourable elements are Water (40%) / Earth (10%) / Metal (8%). Water (40%) is your most unfavourable element. As you have too much of Water, it is best to avoid it having too much more. Earth (10%) is your next unfavourable element. Metal (8%) is your least unfavourable element. The ideal balance of each element is generally 20% of each element. However, it is difficult to achieve exactly 20% of each element. This is because it is difficult to know exactly how much of each element you have at any point in time. So as long as you have more of your favourable elements, you will improve your balance and harmony.2. For us Chinese, often when we were born; our parents or grand parents would consult a geomancer to help select a good Mandarin name based on SAMPLE above.3. And there are alot of rulesets in name selection. 4. For example, Traditional BIG FIVE is used to count the strokes. One of the countries that still use the traditional long form is Taiwan.5. In this example, the person lacks fire and or metal. And has too much water element. Thus, often, to compensate for this the Mandarin characters often have fire and or metal in it and avoiding water element in the name.6. Thus, in this example, since this person lacks FIRE element; then could perhaps choose a name that has FIRE in it... I am not into the details thus, perhaps this person's Christian name could be Rose, rose, I love you = Rose or something like that. And in the mandarin character, it represents fire for that person.7. As there is no precedence in selection of a Christian name, other than making sure that your mandarin names are OK; if you want to consider chosing a name based on your so called "lucky element"; No one can say for sure that you are wrong or absolutely 100 percent right.8. It is also the reverse. For example, there are many Chinese I know, who found out that their Chinese name characters are not the best names. But they continue to be called: Suzie. Thus even if one changes name but everyone still calls her Suzie, does not help. Of course, some say to wear a tag with their "newly acquired" mandarin name.9. Again, this is all a modern interpetation. There are no absolutely correct or wrong answers. It's your call. Most importantly, human factor or always feeling good about itis another important consideration.10. Recently, I went to view a new project. And this agent said her Christian name is OXY. And she said that it is derived from her Chinese Name Initials e.g. Ong Xi Yin or something like. In Mandarin, Oxy would have to be based on sound like ......11. As I mentioned, do what pleases you on the long term... as there is no perfect precedence if any in this area... myfs_154365
Thank you very much for your advice. Because it seems I can't go wrong when choosing an English name b/c there is no absolute rule, I think I'm going with a name that means flower, green, or something to do with the wood element, which is my most favorable element (my second favorable element being earth). By the way, may I ask how you chose the name Cecil for your English name? Was there a process you used? Or did you just like the sound/meaning? This would help me narrow down my short list (Chloe - green shoot, Hayley - hay meadow, etc.) to a specific one.Thank you again and appreciate your help. Staff Cecil Lee Posted March 28, 2012 Staff Share Posted March 28, 2012 These are some considerations:1. Yes, in a broad sense, one MAY not go wrong when choosing a Mandarin name UNLESS:-1.1. One also wants to literally convert or have an identical name in Mandarin.1.2. Here, some English name(s) when pronounced or translated or phonetic-sound-like some inauspicious Chinese name. 1.3. For example, sometimes names with "flowers" may turned out to be a name associated with a Prostitute den in Mandarin.2. Otherwise, if you never going to convert or translated your name into Mandarin, then there is no chance that you may get this wrong.3. Please see attachment. All my brothers, sisters and cousins belonging to the same generation are defined with one character that distincts us from other generations. 3.1 The character HAN was chosen as my generation's "marker" much like a DNA marker, traditionally, do such things.3.2. While our Surname will "never change" as it is always the first character; in this case: the Surname " Li " or in dialect terms it is called LEE.4. If you look carefully, in the attachment, the centre character of HAN is "written" in long-form or Big Five characters. 5. When selecting a name, the long-form or Big Five characters are used to analyse a name. Not the short-form that is used now in China and Singapore. Taiwan still retains the Big-five.6. No my Christian name is not chosen based Chinese name selection principles. More towards personal preference.
