English name is : rickshaw; while in Japanese it is rickisha (puller).
He truly leads a hard life. Wears no slippers or shoes.
And must be a hard ride for the passengers: as the wheels are thin and no suspension. However, at that time, many roads are sandy so can absorb the shock better.
If he was alive, today, he would be 111 years old!

Singapore in the 1900's.
Just look at the photo. So peaceful and serene during those period.
Wait till we have 6.9million citizens.

At a first glance, one may think that this is the killing fields! A field laced with so many skulls. But erh.. look carefully....
In the 1930's coconut plantation. See how the actual coconut (the fruit or nut) is placed onto the ground to grow each tree?

Can't image... contrast this with today's Lavender Street. The photo does not even look like a STREET...

In the past, it was known as the main gate to the government house (today it is called Istana).
Today, you can still see the same gate: entrance to the Istana guarded by several policemen carrying sub-machine guns along the orchard road / side.
