Staff Cecil Lee Posted March 31, 2016 Staff Share Posted March 31, 2016 Wood is considered a media to store rice grains. Nowadays it is hard to find such a wood bin. And they are not cheap e.g. one of the rice bins costs $64/- plus dollars. When compared to the relatively cheap plastic rice bins. Staff Cecil Lee Posted March 31, 2016 Staff Share Posted March 31, 2016 Unlike the wooden rice bins, the charcoal stove is relatively easy to buy in the heartlands of Singapore. Maybe perhaps, in 10 or 20 years time... they are harder to purchase. As today, some elderly ladies still literally use them. In the near future, they may be only used symbolically for move-in rituals by some Chinese who still cling to such beliefs. Staff Cecil Lee Posted March 31, 2016 Staff Share Posted March 31, 2016 Once upon a time, when plastics were hard to come by or not as sturdy as a wooden stool; many homes used them. These wooden stools can withstand rain or water or can be used in the bath rooms. I remembered, clearly when I was young, back then in the 1960's a servant seating on such a stool to wash clothes or holding a life chicken seated on it with a knife to slice the neck of that chicken. Staff Cecil Lee Posted December 14, 2017 Author Staff Share Posted December 14, 2017 Charcoal stoves at Jurong East.. For now this shop Joo Seng Siang Hang has plenty of them...(for now?). The shop is located in a HDB block at this Yuhua Village. In the next few years or a decade.. may be hard to purchase one. For info, these are non-red ones. And traditional were really used in place of an electric or gas stoves. All red glazed ones are more for move-in rituals...
Staff Cecil Lee Posted December 14, 2017 Author Staff Share Posted December 14, 2017 These stoves highlighted by the arrows are often really meant to be used in someone’s service yard in a HDB flat or behind yard of a landed property. The red ones are often ceremonial..for move-in purposes..

Staff Cecil Lee Posted August 21, 2018 Author Staff Share Posted August 21, 2018 Good news is that there seems to be a ready demand for the wooden rice bins. This is the rationale for so many shops selling them in SGP nowadays. Please note that I do not actively monitor their availability. Thus more likely than not for older posts; not sure if they are still available or not. Thus don’t be disappointed if you go there and the shop(s) no longer sell them! Staff Cecil Lee Posted June 23, 2019 Author Staff Share Posted June 23, 2019 Client: Hi Cecil how are u. The house purchase didn’t happen so we didn’t reach out to arrange further. But separately can we check something with u. Is it ok to place rice under our sink. Or rice is usually better to be placed elsewhere. Thanks and stay in touch. Reply: Best not to place rice under the sink... Client: Ok thanks. Was reading your article on it. But hv to be in an enclosed area yes Reply: "Common sense. As often there can be dampness below the sink. And also the sink drainage is nearby. Yesterday client also no choice had to place it same place previously. As this was the largest place they could find to place their pretty large rice bin." Client: We hv an open store area so if we move it out from under the sink the bin will be exposed. If that’s ok then we will move it there. Yes nowadays units small, not much space Thanks much again
