Hi Cecil, we have moved in on Saturday. Thank you for your previous service. I wanna check with you because friends are telling us don’t put welding photo on the bed frame as per photo, is it true it’s bad?

Long time ago pre 1999. Very common to have in fact a large wedding photo frame hung above the bed.

Thus no issue.

Just that for those who have a toddler, they love to pull on the wedding photo and it can drop down and cause injury.

Such a tiny one may hit one's head etc...

More to do with common sense then Chinese customs

Hi Master Lee, may I check with u, would it be ok if we swop our sink & stove position? Thank you

Bad choice:
1.  Above the current sink are wonderful waste pipe of #07-9xx where their sink deposits .. gold... sludge directly above it. This means that the stove will be directly below this lovely waste pipes. Hopefully can add substance and food can taste better.

2.  Common sense says no to a stove with it's backing with windows. A15A0273-3EAE-43AB-BC54-BB8C30C96D12.thumb.jpeg.e921c9f9b67d814eb04f848e57524d5c.jpeg89170569-21DB-4F01-AF8E-ADA156CB9C5F.thumb.jpeg.6646090c0fce95ea32cd538059e98a87.jpeg215B9CE1-7EB2-405C-B276-469986758E0B.thumb.jpeg.1e1d9b472b2b962987b138b0c2684a26.jpeg

Which recessed ceiling lights should I install in my home?

Square lights or round ceiling lights?

1. Frankly, this has nothing to do with Feng Shui. Yes, based on Common sense.

1.1. There are some claims that square lights have higher luminous efficacy. However, there is no argument, here that both square and round lights are of a flat panel design, thus, they should be of equal luminous efficacy.

2. Personally, I always prefer round ceiling lights. Why?

3. Majority of the light installers use a drill with a circular saw attached to it. And the diameter of the saw is just nice so that a circular/round ceiling light can easily be mounted once this hole has been drilled.

4. Contrast it with that for a square light.  You don't see a saw capable of sawing a square hole right?

4.1. To install a square light, a circular hole has to be drilled / sawed. Next, a workman (work-person) has to use a linear saw and start to prepare a squarish hole. And the quality of this square hole is at the mercy of this person. If this person is not skillful or had sawed a larger hole, this is what can happen as shown in the above photo.

This is why I personally prefer this one:

A client showed me this: a tangled mess of blind strings.

Windy home…

This can be quite frustrating especially trying to untangle it.

My unit is directly above a coffee-shop

Source & Credit: Singapore Home D.I.Y.

Rat at aircon compressor?? 😂

Asking for my aunty. She stays at hdb 2nd floor, above a coffee shop. Last week her whole house aircon spoil so she got aircon man to come service (same guys who installed). They found that compressor had broken down. But the whole system was only 1yr+ old.

When they opened it, the technicians found wires were broken, and they concluded that it was bitten by rats and asked her to get town council to come and look.

But aircon company was nice enough to say they will replace the broken parts for her this time. But if it happens again next time, it will be payable.

Questions:
1. Really? Rats can bite the wires until whole compressor spoil? My aunty asks why rats can go in but rain water cannot...

2. How to prevent rats from going into compressor in future?

Town council is going down to take a look this week with their pest control.

Writing makes common sense

I read that some people do not want to have digital lock for their house.

They are scared that in the event of a fire, the firefighters will take a longer time to have to break down the digital lock of the door to be able to go in to rescue them.

Or the digital lock will get burned in the fire than they cannot open the door to escape.

This means a higher chance of them dieing in a fire.

What do you think about this?

"this is a WC that we have terminated in the yard room but every now and then, there is unpleasant odour, i try to seal it off with normal plastic tape but still there is some odor occasionally. Aynyone know where i can get hold of stronger, thicker tape that can seal off the odour? thanks in advance"

Once a WC is no longer in use, the sewer pipe that has a U design no longer contains “water” that acts as a seal preventing nasty methane gas to permeate into your sewer hole.

That is why if it is not properly capped, even tiled over may not help… as the gas can still leak out to the unit. Causing unpleasant smell…

What are the purpose of a "U" curve we see on sewerage waste pipes?

The proper way to ensure that in later years there is no smell is to CAP it:-

[Above] or any similar methods to CAP the sewerage pipe opening left after removing say, a WC

Avoid placing a plastic film or simply place a tile over it. As over time, methane gas can easily permeate it.. resulting in a sinking toilet!

Unfortunately, worth noting is that the major "disadvantage of capping the sewerage hole means that afterwards, the flooring will not be flat. Unlike the quick and easy method of just tiling it up!

Others / Miscellaneous:

P.S. In the past, one can even apply to the authories to reduce the conservancy charges every month. As the number of toilets are taken into account for the billing.

Dear all,

My common toilet has been having a sewage smell on and off for the last couple of years. Tried a few remedies - plumbers resealed the toilet bowl, town council replastered the joints of the big pipes, finally called hdb down to check.

The hdb guy’s answer was that 20 years ago, my contractor had cut off the air vent pipe for aesthetic reasons, and now the seal for that opening, which is under the bathroom tiles, must have worn out already and that is why my bathroom stinks.

Now I am renovating the whole toilet and I’ve asked for the air vent pipe to be reinstated. My current contractor who is very experienced and has done other work well for us before , is surprised by hdb raising this air vent issue. He says nobody (aside from hdb’s HIP) puts in the air vent pipe any more, and to him the logic is faulty bcos if the pipe is sealed n buried, there’s no way to have any smell, while if the pipe is installed there, there is a way for the smell to escape since there’s a pipe that can develop a leak.

The pipe is obviously ugly so I would rather not have it, but I don’t want to deal with this smelly issue again. Should I insist on the air vent pipe?

Built in Wardropes especially for HDB flats should take into account future accessibility to the air conditioning trunking. Especially if one has a Bedroom 2 and or 3
