TiongCJ
Hi, my friends ROM will be in early of May and my ROM will be in end of May. Was told that it is not advised to attend any ROM/wedding events 1 month before our own ROM, else there will be class of luck. Any concern if I were to join my friend's ROM? By clash of luck according to elderly, what does that means? Thank you! Edited April 1, 2022 by TiongCJ
Staff Cecil Lee Posted April 1, 2022 Staff Share Posted April 1, 2022 The Chinese belief is that two auspicious events that are close to each other represents a clash. Resulting to inauspicious luck or 冲喜. Thus in the past people will try to avoid such events that are close to each other. And 1 month between the two events is considered too close for comfort for some. How close or how many days under this is rather subjective. Some have a tendency to quote 100 days. (100 days has more to do with the later. See below.) However, some liberal Chinese argue that they are more concerned if it is/was a traditional wedding date vs ROM. Or rather ROM is just a formality. Since most Chinese only recognise a traditional wedding. Maybe you can check with a grandmother or mum. If they don’t have any issues or rather don’t have the faintest idea, then, it may make you feel at ease. Touchwood! Frankly, Chinese taboos of either marrying within 100 days of a (demise) or 3 years later .. has a higher weight age then the above. Personally, I feel that the younger generation of Chinese like yourself, can dispense with such “ ROM” traditions.
