A May 24, 2026 Straits Times report details a Singapore identity theft and property-loan scam in which an impostor allegedly used a forged NRIC (with the victim’s personal details but a different photo) to try to secure a S$2.9 million loan by using the victim’s Katong home as collateral.

The case surfaced after the homeowner received an Singapore Land Authority (SLA) notice about a caveat lodged against his property—an alert that suggested someone had claimed an interest in the home without his knowledge. After checks with relevant parties, it emerged that the scammer had purportedly approached intermediaries (including law firms) to process documents linked to the loan and caveat, despite the identity mismatch being visible on the NRIC. The victim reported the matter to the police and worked to get the caveat withdrawn.

The article also highlights broader risk points in NRIC fraud, loan application fraud, and property-collateral scams, noting that authorities and corporate regulators have been tightening processes (e.g., stronger identity verification in company-registration workflows) to reduce impersonation and misuse of stolen personal data.
