Case Study: Is it inauspicious for the dining table to face the main entrance door?

This advice falls under the category of a Practical Feng Shui Approach.

Question: Is it auspicious to place the dinning table facing the main entrance door?

1. Frequently, in numerous households in Singapore, as well as in many other households worldwide, it is common for individuals to place food, bread, utensils such as forks and knives, and other food items on the dining table.

Take, for instance, a family of five consisting of a husband, wife, and three children. Typically, the wife, who is often the homemaker, will prepare the meals and set them on the dining table in a small home.

The three children may arrive home earlier and have their dinner with the spouse before the husband, who works overtime, returns later to eat the leftovers on the dining table.

In such scenarios, leaving the door open could potentially allow neighbors passing through the common corridor of an apartment building to catch a glimpse of the food on the dining table.

To avoid a cluttered appearance with food and drinks on the dining table, it is advisable to keep it away from the main entrance to make a better first impression. Additionally, it is considered inauspicious to have utensils like forks and knives facing the main door.

The next time someone asks whether it is auspicious to place the dining table facing the main door, you will be able to provide a more detailed explanation.

Warmest Regards,
Cecil

Hi Master Cecil, my dining table is facing the main door, and there is no other area to place the dining table. Can you please advise if I could put anything or build anything to prevent the inauspicious feng shui?

Much appreciate.

Frankly, this has first and foremost to do with common sense. And common sense led to taboos.

1. Upon entering a home, the initial impression is crucial. Therefore, if the dining table is disorganized, it may create a negative impact.

2. In case the family is enjoying a lavish meal and the main door is left open, outsiders may have a glimpse into our personal space, breaching our privacy.

3. It is due to these significant issues that the concept of inauspicious Feng Shui arises.

4. To counteract this, ensure that if the dining table faces the main door, it is kept clean and orderly.

5. If discomfort persists, consider relocating the dining table or installing a partition for privacy.

Dear Master Cecil Our main door is Northwest and facing our dining table. I cannot move the dining table because next to it will be the hallway. I’m planning to customise a divider. Pls see attachment. But divider wil be this big H180cm W150cm D40cm. The width Im looking at is 150cm because my table is 1.4 so to cover it i need 150cm divider?. My divider will be a bit number 8 shape as i want everything round shape so no sharp edges.pls advise if u can recommend a sample of divider. The main door is Northwest am thinking round shape will be ok? Thanks a lot! Am so excited for your reply.

1. In my view, there are several factors to take into account:

2. In this scenario, the primary concern is the orientation of the main door in relation to the dining area.

2.1. This issue is more related to societal perceptions rather than Feng Shui principles.

2.2. For instance, if the main door opens directly towards the dining table while meals are being consumed, it may raise privacy concerns as passersby could observe the family eating. This is why the notion of having a partition between the main door and dining table has emerged.

2.3. Another important aspect is ensuring that the main door does not open directly towards the living room windows or balcony. In such cases, closing the windows, using panels, or installing curtains can be considered.

2.4. Additionally, it is a matter of common sense and creating a positive first impression. If the first thing visible upon entering is a messy dining table, it may be advisable to have a partition in place.

3. Notably, in this layout, the kitchen's glass panel does not face the main door. This design choice ensures that the internal workings of the kitchen, such as the sink and utensils, are not in plain view. So, what is the issue here?

4. Please refer to the illustration below:

4.1 The suggested partition in Feng Shui symbolism is positioned precisely in the center, with the "blade" of the partition resembling a knife dividing the living room into two equal halves.

4.2 It is recommended that any partition installed should ideally be waist high and above, and not completely airtight. Additionally, it is important to ensure that from the sofa, there is a clear view of the main door. 1967027688_partitionsplitlivingroomintotwo1.jpg.3adac40e25a8dba6a21cddff31687768.jpg

4.3. The partition that is not air-tight is designed to enable individuals seated at the dining table to maintain situational awareness of the main entrance door area. This allows a family member, for instance, to engage in conversation with someone at the main door or to be alerted if someone is attempting to tamper with the main door lock.

Case Study: In the current era, numerous condominium and Executive condo units boast compact sizes, leaving little room for flexibility in positioning a dining table.

1. The dining table, marked with a black "A", can be seen from the main door even when placed there.

2. Hence, one must simply accept the situation. (It is possible that younger individuals may opt for foldable tables from Space-saving idea websites. However, it can be inconvenient to constantly set up and fold the table.)

3. In accordance with Habit 12, it is not beneficial to constantly face obstacles and challenges i.e. as a Head Banger"

I have a similar layout as above, with dining area facing directly to main door.
1stly, we will not have privacy issue as the exterior of our door is a wall as mine is a corner unit with 2 units side by side each other.
the unit next to us is also our family who will be staying. So practically to say, these corner are ours.

can i summarise as above that as long as i keep the dining table clean and neat and have no privacy issue even if i keep my door open, there will be No bad fengshui (even if the dining is facing the main door)?
