Dear Jen, 1. I can quite imagine that your front door and frame is indeed contrasting. 2. From a cultural point of view, Chinese do not like contrasting colours. Especially if the contrasting colour takes on to them an inauspicious `statement': 2.1 In the west white is associated purity e.g. a white wedding grown. 2.2 Under the Five Elements, Metal (white) is also associated with purity. And if we look at a Chinese Luopan closely, it looks similar to your main door but in reverse: The outer square of the Chinese Luo pan is painted red. This outer square represents the earth. If we look carefully at the inner circle plate: (circle represents metal) And this plate is represented by the Heavens. 2. From the perspective of a Chinese Luo pan, your door actually symbollically represents this two state: Heaven and Earth. 3. One quite minor analysis is that fire (red) exhausts metal (white). To me there is no issue here. 4. For some Chinese, they do not like white because, some associate it with `death' or a funeral type of situation. 5. In my opinion, Para 4 is just an opinion by some. Dear Anon, 1. Under the Five Elements concept, crystals are usually considered as belonging to the earth element. The basis for this rationale is because, crystals come from the earth. 2. It would not be prudent to hang too many crystals in the house. The `natural' way is the use of chanderliers with glass crystals. This would be the best method without drawing too much `unsightly' attention. 3. Placing crystals at East and South can be a double edged sword as they are made of earth. 4. We should not be placing or hanging crystals all over the place especially if that location has no lighting. Without light to pass thru the crystal, it has no use at all. 5. Furthermore, hanging too many crystals can be unhealthy, over a long period if it is not frequently cleaned: It is far worse to have dusty crystals than none at all. 6. Some FS practitioners may recommend crysals at North-East and South-West but, it is best to confirm the following:- 6.1 Is there sufficient light to shine thru the crystals? 6.2 Avoid too large a crystal. 6.3 Check for any imbalances at this sector in relation of bad earth elements such as #5 or #2 under Flying Star. 7. Some Feng Shui practitioners may say that it is good to use crystals since, under the five elements concept: Earth produces Metal. 8. This is a double edged sword! When we try to introduce METAL cures, we are trying to exhaust earth element. 9. But what is the use of exhausting it but at the same time, we are adding more earth. The result is that we have to add more METAL cures to try and exhaust bad earth! 10. It is because of this reason, why the "smarter" practitioners go directly to using METAL cures than crystals! 11. Overall, METAL cures are more often much cheaper to purchase. Dear Anon, Please see below:- This Lunar Year until last day of January 2003; the Grand Duke of Jupiter is located at 180 degrees South. Next year he is located at 220 degrees South. During this period, a sector known as the Three Killings is opposite the Grand Duke. For example, if South is Fire Horse, than North is the Water Rat. During this period it is advisable not to disturb North since this is the three killings location as one may have bad luck for several years. There can be two issues:- 1. Make sure that if you are distrubing earth, avoid doing it especially at South sector of the house. As this is akin of disturbing the Grand Duke. 2. For a period 7 house, if the bedroom is at East, and depending on the direction of the main door, this EAST) can be one of the worst locations under Flying Star as the year chart has a #5 misfortune, sickness and the Base 20 year chart also has #5 and some charts may have #2 or #4 or #5 within this sector. 3. Under period 7 house, South can be quite as bad since many of such homes have #2 sickness year and #2 base for the South. For the East part of the house, it is best not to use a 5 metal rod (hollow or solid) at the East sector of the house. The number 5 actually represents Five or #5 or strong Earth. Placing such a wind chime can symbollically increase strong #5 leading to problems associated with health. And prolonged use can lead to family members needing operations! It is best to take down the 5 metal rod wind chime. The safest is to use a 6 rod metal hollow wind chime. The easiest to find is one with 6 uneven alluminium hollow rods and the support `roof' of the wind chime is made of wood and the clinger made of wood. This type sounds more. Although, there is the brass 6 metal rod hollow wind chime, this is very heavy and it also usually has an i-ching (square hole) at the centre of it. This type is ok. Further to what I had mentioned: This plant can be placed in a water fountain. Simply stick it into the fountain, place a few smooth rocks around it to secure it or use a small jar to contain it. This plant can represent the `wood' element in a water fountain at home. It is best that whenever, we have a fountain a home, try to have all five elements:- For example: 1. Water - actual water in the fountain 2. Metal - a circle spouting ball or using a circular bowl. Alternative place 6 coins into the fountain to represent big-metal element. 3. Taiwan, is one of the major exporters of this minature bamboo plant. 3. In the past, it is often sold straight. 3.1 Only in modern times that exporters of this plant added a `twist' to it. 3.2 So that it makes it asthetically pleasing and as you had mentioned added a twist to all sorts of connotations e.g. a `twist' or change of anything .. one can think of e.g. change of luck, change of fate, even change related to romance. 3.3 It is easily grown indoors and little maintenance if any. 3.4 For the common household, we simply have no time to add additional curls to it. And if we grow it for many years, future growth of this upper part of this bamboo shoots will eventually grow straight up. Sure, why not. Many plants need trimming and there is no issue in re-planting it. Frankly, this is not a case of `do or die' senario. Like all other plants, trimming does help promote growth and rejunevation. Info Technology In developed countries or countries with high GDP (especially the US); many of it's business and citizens are plugged into the knowledge economy and the internet. In many of these countries, the ratio of Personal computers (PCs) are high in relation to it's population. It can be as high as 3 or 5 persons to 1 pc. 2. Current Info Technology's disadvantage is that current multimedia has not caught up with the speed of delivery / privacy of multi media content. 2.1 Thus, it is currently not practical to have smart face reading technologies etc... 2.2 Presently in developed countries, many of those who were young when the PC revolution are now taking reigns of the information market. And many of these group of persons are very comfortable without face-to-face interaction. 2.3 SMS and E-mails are their means of major communication. 3. With the above situation, I personally feel that currently face reading etc... will be side-lined for quite sometime in developed countries. 4. However, for `under developed' countries to Third world countries, those that have majority of population living in subsistence, only a select group can well afford info technology. 5. I can quite understand your situation for the need for more tools for face to face or one to one meetings with clients. 6. This is how it also evolved in my country Singapore. In the past i.e. 1960s to 1970s and to slightly around 1980's many of my country Geomancers have walk in crowds who would like their fortune read. 7. Many of these Geomancers are now hoping and praying for someone to walk to their stall. 8. This state of evolution will be evident for similar countries going thru this cycle of country development. 9. In my opinion; the country that will most likely to succeed would be China. I am saying it not because I am an overseas Chinese but rather, China's model is a controlled environment, but yet, flexible to allow for stability and growth. 10. One advantage of the Chinese people, is that many have adopted confucious models of filial piety and wealth is actually, making sure that their next generation receives the best education no matter what. I attribute this to the key success factor of nation building. 11. (This is not meant at you but it is interesting to note " Music soothe the savage soul ". Classics like Vivaldi 4 seasons etc.. " can have a calming efect.) And in the day, if you do not mind pop or just simply listen to the radio all day can help the mind at ease. Tune in stations where the presenter or a pair of presenters chalk up interesting converstations. 2. Frankly, it is good for you if you have mobility to move around outside of the house e.g. window shoping or just spent time outside or some heathly gardening. 3. However, if one is in-mobible, than see if one can invite friends to the home. 4. For the Chinese, a popular pastime is `majong playing' (for the fun). I personally do not play this game which requires 4 person. But an interesting thing about this game is that it involves the contact of all the tiles when resetting the game, making quite a din. 5. For example, in Singapore and Hong Kong, many Feng Shui practitioners specialise in high rise buildings: commercial, industrial and apartments. 4. For example, in Singapore, approximately 85 percent of the entire population of 4 million people in Singapore live in government subsidised housing. This statutory board is called Housing and Development Board or HDB for short. 5. Therefore, many local practitioners see more (assessment of high rise buildings than say landed property). 6. Similarly, in Taiwan and even in Malaysia, many practitioners do more assessments of landed property especially - if it is not in the city. 7. In my opinion, it is because of the high demand for apartment/flat owners to request for FS audits of their interior, many FS practitioners, focus on the interior. For forum users here, the combination of 10 is where all numbers in a sector add up to 10. 3. For example if a sector has #2 mountain and #6 water and base number = #2. 1. One must first know the modern history of the upsurge in the use of Flying Star Feng Shui. 2. Many of us are either left or right handed and each of us have an inclination towards either spatial (the arts) etc.. While others are more mathematical. 3. In the late 1970s to 1980's you will find that several graduates in mathematics or in similar field got interested in the mathematical model of Feng Shui. 4. Perhaps, they can relate better to figures (numbers) than say Shapes and Form. 5. Shapes and Forms and Flying Star are on a continuum like hot and cold. Most of us are inclined to one or the other school. 6. But it does not totally mean that those who practise Shapes and Forms do not use Flying Star or vice versa. 7. If one has the opportunity to ask a famous Master of the old, one can learn the the maxim " all roads lead to Rome ". 8. Similarly, if one does Feng Shui assessments correctly, in most cases, (generally), one may lead to the same conclusion. 9. However, no matter how superior Flying Star Feng Shui is, it cannot beat Shapes and Forms. Especially Shapes and Forms of the exterior has very high weightage. 10. You will be surprised to learn of the quality of some Feng Shui practitioners in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. 11. In the past, the well educated does not ever dream of a career in Geomancy. And many of those who entered the market in my opinion, pick up a few books and start practising. 12. Many of these practitioners are now in their 60's. Some do well because they try to either learn from experience or trial and error. Others, fall badly on the way-side. Since they do not constantly upgrade or is not plugged into the information world. 13. Many of my country's practitioners have never heard of Xuan Kong, Flying Star. 14. Some use basic theory of The Five Elements i.e. North = water, South = fire and advise their clients based on very limited Feng Shui vocalbuary. While others do or die, use only the Eight House Theory. 15. Frankly, I pity those in practitioners in my country who are 50's and 60's. Many have seen strong competition from scholastic Feng Shui practitioners that not only utilise vast number of tools but also are plugged into the information age. 16. The key success factor since 1980's is the vast information in any language on Feng Shui. And this leads to strong consumer awarness. 17. Consumers of Feng Shui or Geomancy, will force many practitioners to upgrade. 18. In conclusion, I strongly believe that after 2003, many highly educated people will take the lead to bring Feng Shui to the next level. 19. In addition, with the internet, it will bring everyone closer together to pull their experiences. Here, we can for the first time, realistically try to use concepts, ideas and cures that work for most people. And discard the not so reliable concepts. 20. You will be surpised to learn that to-date, even in my country, the majority of practitioners are simply just looking within the four walls with notions about wealth corners without first fixing the leak. 21. Many of my country's practitioners are lucky because majority of people in my country have good work attitude, majority being Chinese have good family bonding etc... 22. And it is because of this Man Luck (Human Luck) factor, that whatever they recommend, seems to `work' as Man Luck can in many circumstances reduce somewhat poor Earth Luck. 23. My advise to those who `swear' by Flying Star Feng Shui is to step back and not be too obsessed with it. It is by far, only part of the arsenal of tools in Feng Shui. 24. And many practitioners become too academic in applying it without looking at the bigger picture of the External environment, site, land, building and apartment or house. 25. The clue here is that if we want to employ the arsenal of Heaven Luck (Pillars of destiny) with Earth Luck especially Flying Star, it all boils down to balancing the Five Elements. Dear Janna, 1. Yes, some practitioners call this: the 3 combinations of 1,4,7 or 2,5,8 or 3,6,9. 2. If one looks closely at each sector, that may have any of the three combinations, the fundamental idea here is that one MUST look at all three numbers in a combination e.g. 1, 4, 7 and relate this to the Five Elements Concept. 3. When we chart a Flying Star Chart, some sectors have double 7's. In such a situation, water is used to enhance the double 7 metals in a Period 7 house with double 7's at the main door. Often many practitioners even today, simply look only at #mountain and #water star. And perhaps for this reason, it is best to look closely at all three #mountain with #water with #base number. 4. If one looks closely at the three combinations, it can only be effective if each bad stars in each of the sector has been neutralised or good stars enhanced. 5. In a real authentic Flying Star analysis, each sector's elements are being looked at closely and each sector has to be properly balanced. This is based on the lowest common denominator: The Five Elements concept - weak or strong elements per element. 5.1. Therefore, there is nothing really special in the charting. 5.2. No matter how, one has to chart a flying star chart based on the exact main door direction. And the stars will fly according to a given period. 6. (Water element is either blue, black or grey). 4. In general, since water element does not increase or aid bad earth sickness elements. As compared to yellow or fire element. Especially yellow / beige. Particularly for houses under Period 7. And bedrooms are especially in the EAST. And in some layouts, South is equally inauspicious. 5. In my entire life, I have never used black pillows, therefore, have not considered using it in the future. Personally, I do not mind driving a black car, but, not use black pillows. Again, this is my very personal preference. 6. I am sorry, if the statement below caused you concern. I sincerely apologise for it. 7. In Feng Shui, there is another important influence: I summarise this as " How Thick Skin Are we? " 8. We hear that it is a MUST not to place a mirror facing our bed. The reason is because when we sleep, some suggest that our spirit, leaves our body. And if it sees itself in the mirror, it will get a shock. But, what happens if this spirit is immune to the mirror. It would perhaps wanted to check out and comb itself to look nice before wondering out. 9. It boils down to how sensitive are we? Some of us can take very hot chilli or much hotter than tabasco sauce while others, cannot even take a little chilli. 10. On one hand we have Earth Luck (Feng Shui). This Ming Tang can be a semi-circular pool radiating outwards. Since water is relatively flat, it helps to increase clear space. 7. In my opinion, many Feng Shui practitioners take advantage of our personal `inner greed' to make much of the so call wealth corner. 8. Even under Flying Star Feng Shui, the wealth spot or water position can change, in a 20 year cycle, a year, a month, a day, an hour a minute. 10. If the wealth spot is so simple to locate, how come we cannot buy a one page book that says here " X marks " the spot. 11. Many of the recommend wealth spots are purely psychological. Perhaps, it may help in our Human (Man Luck). 12. For example, some FS practitioners give the remark that it would make us feel nice to see coins at a corner `growing'. 13. And for most of us, if someone tells us that a spot is our wealth luck, we would be more conscious of that location and do regular space clearing (leaving it mostly clear and cleaning it if it gets too dirty). 14. For professional Feng Shui assessment, such luck period are looked at together with your birth element and strength. 3. The factors under 2, are taken when the house Feng Shui, exterior and interior are assessed. 4. Under Para 2 above, if your Ba Zi luck periods are no good, and especially if your house Feng Shui is not good either; this is like a vicious cycle of problems. 5. And I personally believe, your present home has at least 2 major leaks. The most common are:- 5.1 Toilets at wrong locations 5.2 Odd shaped / house with missing corners 5.3 House does not match the ba zi of the breadwinner. The above are the most common leaks in a house.
