Dear Susan, You can check out a recent message in this forum under this (same) conference - Free Advice: Message title: House at the end of a private street - 12/18/2001 and the various exchange of messages. Short info: This type of house has to be `cured' if not there are repurcussions for those staying there such as Financial problems. In my personal opinion, if one has the money, try to sell the land and look for another location to build. Feng Shui can help to correct it but since it is not built up yet, my advise is try to sell it and find another plot of land to build a `trouble free' home that does not require any correction. Dear Susan, Thank you for your sketch of the location. In my opinion, since this house is at the end of the road, it is more important (more than ever) for the Feng Shui of the house to be correct. As more attention should be placed in the layout to neutralise the Sha Qi that comes from a house at the end of the road. If you can avail yourself to a Feng Shui practitioner in your country would be good as it would be worth the while spending more time to get the Feng Shui of your new house correct. Dear Susan, Thanks for the information. Looking at the house, and since it has not been built yet here are my observations: 1. If you can, I would really recommend not having a center courtyard in the home. This is because, a three `sided' court-yard which you mentioned in your `revised' proposal is equally not ideal as it creates an imbalance in Sha Qi and bad feng shui. 2. It is very (very) inauspicious to have the toilets at the frontage of the house with maids/laundry area - is very bad feng shui. 3. To relook at the location of the pool as currently it is at the back of the house. If the pool is still at the location, then, it is best to have a wall e.g. or retaining wall/fence at the back of the house to provide a `solid' backing. Alternatively, the area behind the pool should be `landscaped' with `mountain effect' 4. I am sure not sure, how is the weather in your area but if one look carefully, your living area is located at the West (afternoon sun) while your work area is located at South-West (with the pool) at Devil's backdoor. 5. Currently, the plus point is the main gate meandering sideways to the car porch. 6. It is not ideal to have a store also at the frontage. 7. The house also do not look favourable with a main entrance door (at the frontage). 8. Good homes usually allow for qi to meander and the house also seems (from a top down view) to be uneven i.e. missing or some protusions that is not ideal for `luck'. A more rectangular shaped and compartmentalised (rectangular) shape for each room will be an advantage. Currently, the car porch, and the narrow interior covered walkway, don't look good. Dear Users, I have received multiple emails requesting an explanation of the importance of Kong Teck. Chinese Traditions: What does "Kong Teck (Gong De) 功德 Funeral Memorial" signify? 1. It is believed that this ritual brings blessings to the departed soul. 2. In the traditional sense, it is preferred that an individual passes away peacefully, free from suffering, rather than through a tragic or painful event. 3. It is believed that the guardians of the underworld are compassionate beings who come silently to escort the soul of the deceased to the afterlife. 4. Kong Teck, also referred to as 功德 " Gong De " in Mandarin, is a traditional ritual aimed at assisting the deceased in their transition to the next phase of existence. Made from paper and bamboo strips intricately tied together with strings, these ritual items are typically of a considerable size. 5. Consequently, family members or relatives often invest significant amounts of money in carrying out this important ritual. 6. The ceremony takes place on the 49th day following the passing of the deceased. 6.1. The primary focus is on the incineration of intricate paper replicas, including a stunning paper mansion. 6.2. The ritual also involves burning a bamboo and paper model of a luxury car like a Mercedes Benz. A full paper house hidden behind a power supply box unit... 6.2 And they really look like a car. Besides this, `hell money' or `hell notes' are also burnt. 6.3 These are printed paper money (no value) and these are also burnt. 6.4 The intention behind the burning ritual is to send offerings to the departed loved ones, allowing them to make use of the new possessions in their afterlife. Family members are seen folding gold ingots to be later burned as offerings to the deceased. Family members folding gold ingots for later... burning... as offerings to the deceased:- When folded, the each resembles a Chinese ancient ingot: 7. The intention is to ensure a peaceful passage for the departed souls, free from any ailments. Moreover, there are traditional "silver" and "gold" paper notes, referred to as "Jin Zhi" (silver notes) and "Yin Zhi" (gold notes) respectively. 8. Therefore, Kong Teck is meant to bestow blessings upon the deceased. In contemporary society, certain relatives opt not to fold the gold ingots. Instead, they choose to purchase them in large quantities, stacking them in a burning vessel. 9. During the event, which takes place on the 49th day, if possible, esteemed monks or Taoist priests are hired to recite mantras and more. 9.1 These monks or priests are (considered) as " lawyers " to "plead" the deceased case to the Hell Judge or King of Hell known as 阎罗王 (yan luo wang) - Yama, King of Hell 10. Thus for those who attend this ceremony or visit this ceremony on the 49th day, one has to be `pleasant, happy and peaceful' and must not tell the decease (in their hearts) that he/she was ill. 11. Previously, I shared images on the Picture Resources website featuring intricate "paper houses" and lanterns meant for burning on the 49th day or Kong Teck. Currently, the funeral memorials have decreased in size and can be seen in many Chinese stores that specialize in selling incense supplies. These shops offer a wide range of products including clothing, shoes, Rolex watches, iPhones, tablets, and more. Related to burning memorial... It is possible that a construction supervisor managed to gather foreign workers to assist in burning the offerings for him. It could be that he is utilizing the principles of Tai-chi or delegation in this situation. More...

For example, is the abandoned plantation same level? The main gate is flat or slopes into your home? If it is slopping, is it a gentle gradiant or steep. Dear Christina As mentioned in the earlier e-mail; sometimes we may need to move out especially if the house is not as suitable to the breadwinners. However, we try not to comment further. A competent FS practitioner can usually help to identify the situation. If it is due to some things that can be corrected, then, it may help. As no two situations are alike; it is hard for me to mentioned it. I can recall, situations where; if it is really due to the location and `normal' FS is unable to "cure or correct this "; especially in situations where people face real situations of financial problems. In this situation, they are prepared to `swallow' the bitter pill such as selling their home e.g. a Five Room HDB (govt, housing and development flat) and buying smaller unit i.e. 3 or 4 room flats. Overall, each case depends and what I mentioned was just to (in my hope) to allow you to understand better that Feng Shui is a holistic method involving both a macro (the landscape and site) and micro Feng Shui (the building and interior of the home). Currently, the Horse Year is not favourable in particular especially to the Rat person. Who is born in the years - 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984 and 1996. In the Chinese animal signs "zodiac" from the attached picture, it is interesting to note that the animal opposite each other has the `greatest' mismatch. For example, in the Year of the Horse, this is considered `bad' for a person born under the Rat year and vice versa. The two combined is called " KUN " or trapped or imprisoned. 3. This is another aspect of Symbolism in Feng Shui. 4. Dear Christina, 1. The reason why sometimes we cannot `find' an answer to our `luck' is because Feng Shui should be considered a holistic method. 2. Good Feng Shui analysis normally would help in problem identification such as yours and if done properly would result in good fixes to increase one's luck. 3. What you had mentioned, is more of a case of micro Feng Shui. 4. Here some of the interesting questions are: 4.1 If one is staying in Singapore, a good example are locations. If one pass by good locations or considered auspicious locations generally they are locations where there are many landed properties. Or a constant renewal of new homes and condominums built on these land. 4.2 For example: One excellent site in Singapore is the " Seletar " area. If one drive past this seletar area (along Yio Chu Kang Road) one cannot help notice the number of landed properties and (few if any) government housing boards in sight. 4.3 Why is this? If one drives along Yio Chu Kang road and travel down some of the roads leading to such excellent " Seletar " estates; one notice that the roads are somewhat on a `hill' while these estates are gradient and lower than the Yio Chu Kang Road. 4.4 The secret here is - Does one's property or home sits on a location that can `COLLECT WEALTH'? 4.5 Usually, these locations are lower and somewhat may be described as (if one looks carefully) in a basin. 4.6 As one knows, a basin can collect .. (something). Here, it can be considered as Wealth. 4.7 If an other development happened to be on the fringe of this `basin' and it's wealth seems to drain into the basin, here it is considered " Your wealth is drained towards another or beneifiting others ". 4.8 Such a "basin" is under Shapes and Form Feng Shui considered ' YIN ' but rich in habitat like insects. 5. Thus one can without proper Feng Shui advise, do a million things to enhance one's house but for many years, simply ` no luck'. (Feng Shui refers to our " Earth Luck " which is the luck of our house - land or earth) 6. If luck in the above senario can be cross reference to Destiny (Pillars of Destiny) or `Heaven's Luck' this is even more potent and the combination of this is called " Ba Zi Feng Shui ". A proven and effect method if analysed correctly. 7. Thus, we should not be simply "myopic" or just pay attention only to our interior of the house. Dear Susan, 1. A rectangular shaped court-yard represents the Earth element. 2. Quite a coincidence that you had asked this interesting question. Let me relate a past story. This is a true story. I had one client who had lived house similar to what you had mentioned i.e. with a rectangular court-yard. Before he consulted me, he was in financial difficulties and further more had a serious car accident (nearly lost his and family's life) and lost money in his business. 3. Furthermore, the main entrance door of this house (with rectangular court-yard) faced north direction. (Later under Para 4, this was found not suitable to the breadwinner who is a "weak earth" person. 4. I was asked to analyse his house and I found the following:- 4.1 His Pillars of Destiny element is " Weak Earth ". 4.2 As mentioned under Para 3, his main door faces " North " (water element). Since he is a weak earth person, although water is suppose to be his wealth BUT to a weak earth person IT BECOMES a financial burden to him. 4.3. I had thus asked him to change the door of this house to South (Fire) where Fire element will help his weak earth grow. 4.4. He had placed a tree in the court-yard and several plants. This is considered highly `inauspicious'. Symbolism is important in Feng Shui and the tree with the resulting outline of the earth (rectangle) over it represented = Mandarin character for " Imprisonment ". All these spelt bad news for the owner. 5. After, I had advised him and since the changes made by him; he has turned around all the early problems and I understand that he is doing well now. Dear Alan, 1. The first approach is to use the Eight House Theory. This theory is quite interesting because: 1.1. It is used to find out " How suitable a house is to the breadwinner ". 1.2. Next, we look at the layout plan of the house and where the location of the bedrooms are for each person i.e. Husband, wife and children. Thus, it would be advantages if the sectors in each room e.g. Master bedroom (Husband and wife) and other bed rooms suit each indivdual members of the house. 2. Dear Isabel, Thanks and Seasons Greetings! 1. I am not sure whether are you referring to the application of the `Ba Gua' i.e. the Eight House Theory or The Flying Star Theory. 2. In fact for both the Eight House Theory and Flying Star Theory, these two concepts are based on Compass School Feng Shui. 3. And in general, it is based on the location (determination) of the main entrance door. 4. The logic here is that there is only one main entrance door. If so, for a house with 2/3 or more storeys, it is determined by looking at the direction of the main entrance door from the centrepoint of the house. Dear Charles, It is best to look at two charts and see which is the better chart. As the Flying Star or the birth chart of the house differs in each door direction. Yes, if you are `changing' the door or using a backdoor to become a main door, then, you can do so. 1. However, this existing backdoor should not be smaller than your present main door. 2. It should open inwards, 3. If the main door has two doors (left and right) - it is best to have this configuration. 4. The new `main door' should also have the house number placed on it. 5. Dear Bam, 1. Frankly, I have not read any books from Terah Kathryn Collins. But it the `Feng Shui' is based on fixed template then, it may not be relevant to authentic Feng Shui. 2. Nowadays, the market is flooded with (many, many) books on Feng Shui. 3. If you are in a book shop, take the opportunity to browse thru the books. It is preferred that one should purchase books that make us `learn' or understand. Rather than many books that `sensationalises' Feng Shui. For example, books that may cause more harm then good: where the author, says .. play 3 coins in the accounts book or ehance the SW or romance sector. 4. It is because of such books, some published in the early 1980s that give the `wrong' signals and unfortunately give Feng Shui a bad name. 5. Two years ago, I read in a newsgroup; that a husband posted on the internet. He said that his life was ruined because, his wife, `kept' the secret of her FS consultations - as she had unfortunately consultated those who use a `marketing' ploy and inject some mysticism on the use of FS. The end result is, she spent a considerable sum on FS and the family got into financial difficulties. 6. Recommended Book authors:- 6.1. One good way to look at books are how many books did the author publish? Especially for one topic. One classic book author, I would recommend is - Derek Walters . 7. Author: Derek Walters For Feng Shui books, as far as I am aware, he wrote only two books:- 7.1. Title: " Feng Shui " Perfect placing for your happiness and prosperity In this richly illustrated and highly informative account, Derek Walters unravels the mysteries of traditional Chinese geomancy and presents simplified version of the ancient Chinese compass or Lo P'an to calculate fortunate locations and placings. 7.2. Title: " The Feng Shui Handbook " This book gives a good understanding of the Five Elements Concept. 7.3. Although these books are written sometime back (one of the first books) on authentic Feng Shui, nevertheless, they are in my opinon `classics' for the beginner. 7.4. I like to caution that these books (really) teach or makes good grounding. If one is looking for " Fast food Feng Shui " or spoon fed tips, then these books are not for them. 8. Dr Evelyn Lip Her books are always academically correct and has rich illustrations and most importantly ... facts and facts. For those who are doing research for e.g. school projects on FS, can look up several of her books. Titles like : Chinese Geomancy and other titles. However, her books are (in my opinion) although contain history and facts, these books are more for reference. But if one reads them carefully, there are some good materials. By the way, what led Dr Evelyn Lip wrote her first book was for her thesis when she first studied architecture in university. 9. Some of the `older' Lillian Too's book like " Basic Feng Shui " is acceptable especially for the understanding of Shapes and Form Feng Shui. But, I am not too keen to recommend other books as some of them do not really teach but as mentioned earlier, "sells" tips that may be too general and may ultimately cause damage. 10. You will not have a problem finding other FS books especially from authors who do not have associations with Lin Yun. 11. Nine Star-Ki It is said and many confirm that Feng Shui started in China. There was a time where, Japan, which was close to China adopted another `holistic' method ie called Nine Star-Ki. Today, Nine Star-Ki is popular in Japan and in the United Kingdom. Essentially, Nine Star-Ki and The Flying Star Feng Shui are one and the same. As they use the Luo Shu Square. But, Nine Star-Ki can be seen as a holistic `package' that looks more at personal " Flying Star. " Unfortunately, it is difficult to `mix' Traditional Feng Shui e.g. The Flying Star FS with Nine Star-Ki. So, it is best to learn one or the other. If you decide to go for Nine Star-Ki then some of the authors include: Jon Sandifer and Simon Brown 12. Since you have alrady bought a few books on Feng Shui, I personally feel quite bad about it. Dear Users, I promised to post the pictures showing the type of wind chime used in Feng Shui as a cure. Description of wind chime: 1. The 6 rod (brass) metal wind chime. This wind chime is used particuarly as a cure for #5 (misfortune stars). 2. If you carefully of some of the pictures (especially - bottom up) you will find that each of the 6 rods are hollow. 3. In some of the pictures you will also find the i-ching coin hang at the bottom of the rod. Look carefully at the pictures.... 3. The rationale for using the 6 rod (brass) wind chime is for the following reasons: The number 6 represents - " Big metal " or `strong metal'. Brass (made of metal). Dear Bam, 1. In my opinion, Black Sect Tantric Buddhist (BTB) appears to have been a modern "invention" fabricated in the mind of one person: Thomas Lin Yun. It has no basis in or connected to Traditional Chinese Feng Shui. 2. BTB is not recognised by many practitioners of Traditional Chinese Feng Shui. Traditional practitioners also consider BTB to be Psuedo-Feng Shui. It is based primarily on a marketing scheme derived from superstition and profit. The above article will certainly share light in the `marketing ploy'. 4. You are `correct' to say that BTB can be considered as a `western version' or rather western `invention' as the founder of BTB, has been populating this BTB in particular in USA. 5. For those who are staying in Asia, in particuar, Hong Kong; China; Taiwan and Far East i.e. Singapore, Malaysia, I can assure you that as far as I know, I have yet come across a BTB practitioner in such countries. 6. Thus, how can it be that, so many countries in Asia, does not even come close to such `teachings' or un-Feng Shui practises. This is thus a strong `signal' that we should not follow such methods. Dear Cheli, Thank you for bring up this interesting question. Many of us may become quite confused with `differing' concepts or theories. Usually, a concept or problem need to be redressed (without first taking into consideration - personal self). Let me take a parallel:- In Flying Star Feng Shui, if a location has bad #5 (misfortune) and further more the year chart also has this #5 - we need to really redress this problem (no matter if the sector in question is considered "unfavourable" to the individual). Here, there is a real need to neutralise the problem at this sector. If the requirement is to use a metal windchime, then, we need to use it. Using a wooden windchime - is no solution to the problem. Once this sector is neutralised, it thus considered as neutralised. Similarly, if under the 3killings, there is a real need to use metal windchime, do use it rather than find another "alternative" such as wooden windchime. Warmest Regards, Cecil

Dear Per, In my opinion, for a small that is shared for livingrm cum office cum bedroom, more importantly the placement of the various furnitures. And avoid `clutter' where possible. Under Feng Shui, the most appropriate concept used here is the Yin and Yang concept. Where, there should be a `balance'. In moments of rest (sleep), a more conducive yin environment is good. But while working, too conducive of such a yin environment is not favourable. I believe, that your room should have a window. And, depending on the direction also i.e. if the window area faces directly west, then, it may be quite hot (depending on your country - season). Overall, try your best to balance your environment. Dear Wilyam, Thank you for your layout plan. Yes, I personally (not sure why) but one glance and I preferred the bedroom 1 instead of bedroom 2. The position of your bed is considered favourable under Shapes and Form Feng Shui. As for lucky charms, personally, I am not too sure how well they will work. But really no harm. I am not sure what your fortune bagua looks like so unable to comment further on this. Overall, the electric lampost does not in my opinion also pose any threat. Yes, they can still be side-by-side but preferably, there is a gap between the two. Or a small gap should do. To symbolically differentiate the two. Apologies for the late reply. For round fruits, the preference is that either they add up as even numbers or the preference is 8 fruits (for luck) or 9 fruits (longevity). Office Warming (like Home warming) is considered an essential part in bringing good Qi and luck for the occupants in the new premises. Another major consideration (or superstition) is to `ward' off evil spirits. 1. First, an auspicious day and time is chosen for the move. If one does not consult a FS practitioner, than a good date is usually the 15th day of each lunar month. up. (Full moon). 2. On that day, all windows, openings, grilles or opening in the walls and if there is skylight into the building, it has to be be covered up e.g. with black paper. The duration of this `black-out' is for an hour before the Office Warming Starts. 3. Make sure that all electrical lightings and power (power-points) are switched offered during this time. 4. Often, the tradition of a red cloth banner is hung over the front door. Here is the interesting part:- 5. When it is nearing the time for the office warming, the owner or the manager would start the charcoal stove by lighting it up ..the coal and make sure that the charcoal is burning hot. This symbolises " boom " in business. 6. At the precise time (that was chosen), the owner has to place the stove at the centre of the main entrance. He has to walk over the stove with his left foot first, then followed by his right foot. His employees follow him behind and do the same. 7. The owner opens the main entrance door and takes down the red banner. 8. The black paper covering windows etc.. are quickly removed to welcome the `light' coming in. 9. Now, the power or lightings are switched on. 10. It is the belief that during this ceremony, all office employees stay around and should not leave the premises - symbolic of maintaining harmony. There are many Feng Shui practitioners and in my opinion, I feel that some of these practitioners may not `live' up to the standard. Thus, the end result is that many people become disillushioned with it. In addition, I personally feel that many people are also to be blamed. The rationale is unfortunately " greed ". I can understand money is important but, when we depart our hard-earned money to buy or enhance a sector, this can become worrisome. Or to buy e.g. a three-legged toad. For example, I understand, that such objects costs money. And, we cannot automatically say that when we spend $XXX dollars of money, we can get back that amount or even more. In order for Feng Shui or Pillars of destiny to work properly, this is usually done in a holistic way. Thus, if one is a weak wood person, it would be nice to enhance one-self further with say water element. Since blue/grey or black represents water element - for personal self, one can enhance oneself with e.g. wearing a blue shirt. However, this does not automatically imply that one will get well off. It is like taking exams, and the purpose is to score as much marks as possible in all areas rather than place it in one basket i.e. try to make sure that there is no poison arrows aimed at the home etc.. are some of the precautions needed. Alternatively, #5 would usually require `moving' metal eg. wind chime or a brass pendiulim clock. No, this is not true under Pillars of Destiny. The explanation given under Pillars of Destiny is that although one can be born on the same year/day/month/hour; we each grow up in a unique environment. Dear Deepti, Please see below:- One must correctly understand the purpose of the Eight House Theory:- 1. In general, it can be used to find out how suitable a house is to the breadwinner. 2. It is good to have good intangible force in the bedroom. If the sector is not as auspicious to one spouse but good for the other spouse; the spouse who has the "better" intangible force sleeps closer to that sector (shielding) the other partner. Thus if North (bedroom) is an auspicious sector for the husband e.g. his health sector; while it is the disaster sector for the wife; then the husband sleeps closer to this sector.
