Dear Max, There are many theories involved with regards to the kitchen: 1. Some FS practitioner feels that kitchen should be in harmony with either spouse. Either/or should be auspicious sector for either say the husband or wife. Please see below:- The main `argument' here is that it has to do with the fire element. Some FS practitioners feel that fire may be harmful as it can result in frequent quarrels. However, this is less of importance and we should be focusing more on:- 1. The kitchen has both the fire and water element i.e fire (stove) and water (the basin/refrigerator). 2. Priority is that the stove should try to face inwards in the kitchen as it helps to keep the warmth-in. The kitchen is seen as a place that provide both food and warmth to the household. 3. Another major consideration is the position of the stove in relation to the wash basin / fridge. And the stove should especially be kept a distance or there should be a gap between the two. 4. If the kitchen is at the north, the stove and frige should not face each other as North = Water, may just distinguish the warmth of the stove. 5. If the kitchen is at the south, the stove can face the fridge. The siting of the kitchen door is less important than the placement of the stove. Cecil Lee

Dear Angie, 1. For the front door (main entrance); if a lamp post looks like `slicing' thru it, then this is a `sha qi' or poison arrow. 2. One can apply the `triangle effect' by placing two plants on both sides of the main entrance. By doing so, symbolically the two plants with the lamp post forms a `triangle'. With the point (lamp post) pointed towards the neighbour's home. 3. Another option is to place a semi-cicular rug outside the main entrance (radiating outwards). Preferably the carpet should be red. As red represents the fire element and will help destroy or neutralise a METAL lamp post. Please note that if the lamp post is made of a wooden post (WOOD) element then one should then use golden (gold) or white rug to neutralise wood. As gold / white represents METAL element and is the element that can destroy WOOD. Where the element preceeds the element of the object should be used to `destroy' it. Dear Angela, In my opinion, it would be best if you want to apply Feng Shui to get a FS practitioner to go thru all the details. As the modification may affect i.e. the Shapes and Form of the home (itself) and Compass School readings. If you do not want to engage a FS practitioner, you can try to make sure of the following:- 1. Shapes and form Feng Shui. Here, you made a good point by trying to make sure that the house is as rectangular as possible. 2. Outline of the house. Does the house resemble any "human body" shape? If you have not read this article, please go thru it:- http://www.geomancy.net/fs/grandpa1.htm It highlighst an actual case study: House influenced by Feng Shui (Yang Zhai Shi Shu). This particular case, involved my grandfather who had `chopped' off the head of the house to build an extension. There are two critical - "errors". Dear Carol, We can all appreciate your situation. In a confined space, there is not much one can do to relocate these items. However, this is not the `end of the world' as far as Feng Shui is concerned. In your case, just make sure that there is an `island' or a distance or gap especially between the stove and either the frige or the sink. Try to leave as much gap as possible. Dear Tril, If you have not reviewed how to find the main door direction, please check out:- http://www.geomancy.net/fs/cecilcompass.htm In the graphic presentation on the above site, you find that at the last part of the presentation, I actually superimposed a circular protractor i.e. 360 degress protractor on the layout plan. Here, you should then mark out i.e. 0 degrees (North), 45 degrees NE, 90 degrees East etc... and this is how you draw a `pie chart' with North, NE, East, SE, South, SW, West, NW. In fact there are two methods of dividing a room i.e. by diving it into 9 equal sectors as what mentioned below or using the `pie chart' method. Dear Tril, There are several rulesets in Feng Shui. One of the more visible method is: the 33.3 percent ruleset. Here, so long as a sector or location has 33.3 percent of an element, it can be said that this element is dominant at that sector. A good example is let's say a bedroom. If we paint the walls and this cover more than 33.3 percent of the entire wall with blue, then we have `applied' a significant amount of water element. Thus painting a wall or using bedsheet to cover the bed are some of the options. Please see below:- Thus we can use numbers to associate with an element. Thus 6 or Six signifies BIG METAL, then we can use 6 coins to represent BIG METAL as a cure. However, do take note of the following:- BAD YELLOW or star #5 - Bad Earth element or Misfortune. Here, it is better to use `moving' metal to neutralise Bad earth. Thus a metal windchime can be used here to produce metal sounds to neutralise the star #5. FOr #2 sickness sector, BIG METAL or 6 coins can be used here. Once can also have e.g. furniture in natural wood colour e.g. brown. Or laminated cabinents e.g. in green, wood grain etc.. Dear Anon, Please see below:- It is common for your home and many other homes to have a shoe rack conveniently located as mentioned by you. We have to be realistic in the way we apply Feng Shui. A shoe rack e.g. at the front of the house is `secondary' to Feng Shui. More importantly, we need to score as many marks or points as possible in other more important areas. For example, if one has good shapes and form Feng Shui, this would bring up our `luck' in other areas and things like placement of shoe rack is less important issue. It is good that the inner door e.g. we call this the actual door should open inwards. As for the grille gate, there should not be an issue of it opening outwards. Anyway, technically, it is not practical to change it to open inwards as it will affect the `inner' door. If you are staying in Singapore, a neutral colour is a white door as Singapore is considered as located `South' - fire element. It is best to apply the Flying Star Feng Shui to access the colour of the doors. This is because each sector should be `balanced' i.e. the mountain # ; water # and base number should be looked at. If there are any imbalance, then it should be neutralised by painting the door a specific colour to either neutralise the imbalance or if this is a good sector a good colour be used to enhance it. Dear Anon, If the table is within a cubicle, then this is fine. It is also good that your table is `supported' at either side or by a partition. Dear Amy, Usually, under Feng Shui, painting of the door is based on the following considerations: 1. Are there any threats to the frontage of the house? If there are threats to the main entrance: Example 1: If the main door is facing a cemetry or tombstones.. then it is good to paint the door in the most yang of colours i.e. RED. Red is also chosen as an auspicious colours e.g. Chamber of Commerce building or the colour of temple doors. Example 2: Singapore is considered in the `South' and generally, since South represent Fire element, Metal colour doors or White is a generally good colour for the door. 2. The front door colour should `harmonize' with the element of that direction. It is best not to have a main entrance facing North and painting the door RED (unless e.g. facing a cemetry). As North represents WATER element may clash with Fire element e.g. RED. 3. Yang colours - bright colours (a sense of protection). As mentioned under Para 1, Yang colours can be considered as a protective colour for the main entrance door. Another method is to check out the Five elements concept and see if the colours help in the Productive Cycle and avoid colours that clash under the Destructive Cycle. Dear Berna, I cannot `blame' you for being confused with so many " Types " of Feng Shui. Especially since, there are lots of sites nowadays using Black Hat Sect " stuffs ". In my opinion, any other `styles' are much better than applying Black Hat Sect. In Traditional Feng Shui there are principally two major schools- a. Shapes and Forms Feng Shui b. Compass School (Such as Flying Star and Eight House). As much as we would like to apply Feng Shui as fast as we can, it is best to understand the rationale for each School and try to understand the basics. For Shapes and Form Feng Shui, you can tour the resources in this site or simply get a book on Shapes and Form Feng Shui. Dear Alex, In my opinion, for a 1 room flat/apartment; usually, it would depend greatly on the `larger' building and site. In my opinion, since this is a 1 room flat, one may not get a `Quantum Leap' in Feng Shui by `applying' FS principles here. This is because many of the concepts of Compass School may not be easily applied as the area is pretty small. Here, one important point which I feel is that if one cannot achieve a `Quantum Leap' in Feng Shui, the `returns' in using FS may not be that effective i.e. it is like spending $1.00 to get back only $0.80 cents or less or even if we can get back a small profit of `$1.01 cents is this good enough. For, small apartments, it is best to apply the wider scope of Feng Shui i.e. the Yin and Yang concept .. i.e. keep the room bright and .. clear space is good. Warmest Regards, Cecil

Dear Erin, Under the Eight House Theory, the important point is that if one does not spent time at a specific location, it has little impact on the person. Thus, even if the prosperity area/sector is at the toilet, if one does not spent time at that location, it has relatively little impact. It does not automatically mean that because the prosperity area is at the toilet, using the toilet ie. flushing it will mean flushing down one's wealth. This `prosperity area' is only but one of the many other sectors within a specific theory and accounts for a smaller percentage of luck. Warmest Regards, Cecilh

Dear Anon, Usually, the living room should have `clear space'. But what you mentioned may not necessarily mean that your home may not be auspicious. Perhaps, you have to look at your entire house layout rather than base the assessment solely on the door opening... Overall, even if the main door does not have clear space, we can use this to be the direction of the main door but consider other aspects such as the location where light comes in the `brightest' into the home. What you need to do is to see that this location e.g. the living room has clear space within the living room (if possible). Frankly, there is really no `harm' in using mirror(s) as many FS practitioners consider it as being able to either enhance or reflect qi or divert it. The only concern is that if it is an inauspicious sector (the fear) that it may bounce back twice the bad luck. To find out if it is an auspicious or inauspicious sector, it is normally thru the assessment done using the Flying Star analysis. Warmest Regards, Cecil

Dear Anon, Yes, the centrepoint is defined as the centre location of the house where one takes a reading of the house from that point to the main door. Please see below:- As mentioned above. In my opinion, if you can use a `day' curtain i.e. that allows light to flow in but blocks out the view of the poison arrow - this would be a better choice. From my personal (past experience), some of the clients who had placed a water position at the centrepoint of the house; have fallen sick often. And there may be an unexpected drain in finance. Dear Anon, Please see below:- Under the Flying Star theory, a house can be considered auspicious (bearing in mind that Shapes and Form Feng Shui has also to be considered) - if it has a "double" number similar to the period. For example, if the house's main door is located at North 1 and there is a double 7's i.e. mountain star = 7 and water star = 7 for a house under Period 7. Similiarly, for a period 6 house, there is a double 6's (mountain star = 6 and water star = 6) for a house built under Period 6. Similiarly, for a period 5 house, there is a double 5's (mountain star = 5 and water star = 5) for a house built under Period 5. In addition, houses built under period 4 should can also have auspicious double `4's etc... I hope you get the `picture' of the above senarios. You do not need to place an additional house number on an existing main entrance door especially if this is the door you commonly use. However, for those who have identified another door as their main door (maybe because the alternative door) is considered more auspicious then, one can place a house number on this door. Dear Maria, In my opinion, this perhaps may have to do with symbolism. Perhaps, what you have read is that the particular author felt that photos above a fireplace could represent it being `burned' i.e. the fireplace represents fire. Any pictures above it may be symbolically `burned.' You could perhaps introduce a `neutral' element e.g. Earth e.g. pottery on the mantle piece of the fireplace. This year and next year based on the Lunar Calendar:- This year: 24 Jan 2001 to 11 Feb 2002 Next year: 12 Feb 2002 to 31 Jan 2003 We have to remember that the above dates should be considered instead of the start of each year. Thus `next year' does not start on 1 January 2002 but rather the first day of Chinese New Year or 12 February 2002. Please see below:- This year (2001 - refer to Para 1), which is the year of the Snake, the Grand Duke or Tai Su is located at South-South-East or 150 degrees. The location in conflict is the East. Next year (2002 - refer to Para 1), this is the year of the Horse. or South, 180 degrees. The location in conflic is the North. What is the location of conflict? This is the location which is in conflict with the Grand Duke poistion. One should not do any renovation or repiars opoosite the location in conflict. For example, if the location in conflict is the South, do not have any renovation done in the North location. Usually not. If you are referring to the Flying Star numerology... that is. To be more accurate, one may have to use the Flying Star Chart to analyse this location. if there are too many `yin' stars or numbers `flying' at this location, then, the chances of having vivid dreams is real. Once you determine the compass direction from A to B, you can then input the direction on a copy of a layout plan. With a protractor, you should then align it to the compass direction. Dear Derek, If you are taking the compass direction of your unit's main entrance door, this should usually be the door to your unit i.e. as you had mentioned it should be the `North'. Dear Rohit, The situation, you face is very common for most of us. Do take note that the Eight House Theory is but one of the many theories. More importantly, it is used for: 1. How suitable the house is to you. 2. Even if both partners are `opposites' this should not be an issue. One can also apply the `shield' i.e. one partner who has favourable sector sleeps closer to that sector, while the partner, sleeps on the other side.
