  1. Dear Wendy, Based on Feng Shui guidelines, there is a difference between `building' a house and finding a good date or year to build a house. Let me elaborate: You can usually find a good date in the year 2000 as there are 365 days in a year and even if it is in December 1999, you can still find a good date the next year. Another point is that Chinese New Year does not follow the English New year. For those who are very new to Feng Shui, please take note that when we discuss Chinese New Year, in short it is CNY or for this year Earth-Rabbit, Chinese New Year is from 16 Feb 1999 to 4 Feb 2000. Here you will notice that Chinese New Year 1999 only ends on 4th February 2000. Therefore, it is wise not to offend the Grand Duke up to 3 February 2000 on the East side of the house. To be frank, in Singapore or Malaysia, it is easier to find a Feng Shui Master to look at your project and majority are able to provide you with professional advise : 1. the date of starting the construction. 2. the survey of the site, land and layout. In your case, I am not sure you can find an a true Traditional Expert. The expert even looks at the type of sand on your construction site etc... Anyway, what you can do is:- 1. Apply the Shapes and Form School of Feng Shui for the site and the land e.g. using the Four Symbolic Animal concept url: http://www.geomancy.net/fs/four.htm 2. Eight House theory e.g. where best try to avoid the death and disaster line on the main entrance or bedroom. But priority goes to Para 1. 3. Pillars of Destiny 4. Flying Star I am unable to list out more situations. You have to understand that you can invariably find a suitable date and it does not mean that Year 2000 is a good or bad year for construction. You will be glad to know that we are now in Period 7 and onwards. So you may ask `what is the big deal' about it? Period 1 refers to the birth of a new period; Period 2 to 5 are one of the worst periods because as you are aware, No. 2 and 5 are bad Flying Star periods and it could account for World wars etc... What is so significant about Period 6, 7, 8 and 9. In general, these `Stars' are considered Auspicious because, after all the toll in Period 1 to 5, the generation under period 6, 7, 8 and 9 reap the `so called ' rewards (in general). This is similar to some business. For example, the grandfather build a business, it grows from a retail to a wholesale business (PERIOD 1 TO 5), the son takes over, inturn, he enjoys the fruits (PERIOD 6, 7, 8 AND 9) but after his lifetime, his son perhaps overspends and what happens? This company may go into bankruptcy and returns to Period 1. The Nine Stars 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 goes in a circle. Therefore, what I am mentioning is that most houses according to the Luo Shu or Flying Star numerology implies that number 6 to 9 are `better' periods than 1 to 5. Again this is just a general summary. You still have to be careful because no matter how, each house will still have to content with the Flying Stars of 2 and 5 (x2) as the mountain and water stars each have a 2 or 5.   2. Hi, I like to add a few words on this subject:- 1. As most users here are aware, the tearing down of a building complex to turn it into a public park is a very Feng Shui move. If you can recall, the front of the house or office building should be " flat " ie. under the Four Symbolic Animal concept, the front is the `phoenix' which signifies it flies freely in open space. Similiarly, the Bright Hall is also called another term i.e. Ming Tang. Traditional practise, you will find a pool (not stagnant water) in front of the building. It is usually semi circular i.e. radiating away from the building. This is why sometimes, if you have a poision arrow aimed at your main entrance, I advise some of the users to lay a circular carpet on their front door radiating outwards. This is the same concept as above. Alternatively, if the front door is elevated, you can use semi-circular steps. All these are considered `neutral' or Feng Shui friendly or environmentally friendly or " White " Feng Shui. " Black " or offensive Feng Shui uses the Ba Gua mirror above the door. The most offensive is to use a cannon e.g. same as those olden cannons on the ships to deflect outwards. I have mentioned sometime back that in Singapore, two neighbour's doors are within 1 meter facing each other. I was doing an Audit then and I noticed that one neighbour used the Bagua Mirror and I believe, the other neighbour used another reflective mirror to deflect the `sha'. As you can see, it is not equally good for both house holds. Like magic or sorcery (oops Feng Shui is not any of these!)..... We can add abit of language in this Forum by calling Environmentally Friendly Feng Shui -- White Feng Shui and Offensive Feng Shui -- Black Feng Shui:) I believe, the metal huge globe is to slow down the `disruptive sha' at the junction. Please remember that under the Shapes and Form School of Feng Shui, modern watercourses have been replaced by roads which is the equalvent of water element in modern times. Hi, This past question posted in the forum and available at this URL: http://www.geomancy.net/fs/ruler.htm will help you to understand the `Imperial Chinese Ruler' and how it is used or not used today:- Question: have a set of antique furniture which was given by my mum. I measured the furniture and it fits the good measures of the Feng Shui Ruler. Is this good? Can you also elaborate more on the Feng Shui Ruler? Yes most `true' antique furnitures (Chinese influence) do have a set of measurements that follows the Feng Shui ruler. As the furniture was given by your mum (to confirm: from her home?) if so, it is OK. For other antique furniture that you want to purchase, where possible check it's origin. This is because it is said that furnitures do absorb the Qi from its surroundings and for example when we purchase a home, a FS Master would normally also ask who were the previous owners especially if the house has been built for quite some time. This is the same rationale used to check on the antique furniture's origin. For the dining table, one of the best materials is still wood. New furniture needs sometime to absord Qi from it's surrounding. Glass and marble are less favoured dining table material because of it it's "hard surface" (which is Yang). Do note that "plastic " or polycarbyte are also considered " hard " and Yang. Yin materials is considered to provide generally a more `cosy' especially for the home. 2. Feng Shui Dimensions and the Feng Shui Ruler - Under Yin Feng Shui or Feng Shui for the dead, great importance is placed on measurements e.g. of the grave tombstone etc... Currently, not many Feng Shui Masters know this skill as Yang Feng Shui or Feng Shui for the Living is `more widely' used today. This is mainly because of land scarcity and the need to cremate the dead. Cremation is said to have a neutral effect on the decendants of the dead. Secondly, Feng Shui for the living is `more lucrative'. I understand that most users will ask this question: Is it important to follow Feng Shui measurements? Lets look at these points:- In the present day, there are many furniture designers and furniture makers. It is not possible to use the measurements on the Feng Shui ruler. Even if som e furniture makers are aware of it, they may not believe in Feng Shui. Most of us are not able to custom design home furnitures. Even if we do, we may only custom design e.g. built in cupboards but not possible for every furniture in the home e.g. dining table, sitting room table and chairs etc... So what should we do? I like to point out there are a few Schools of Thoughts regarding this matter:- (1). Some Feng Shui Masters may say... use your six sense or the " Intuitive " form of Feng Shui and buy what you like and " meets " your needs. This is a sensible approach and the most practical in today's world. Simply go get what you like. I agree with this. (2). Some Feng Shui designers (through their learning of Feng Shui) have incorporated some Feng Shui friendly features e.g. furniture with `rounded' corners. Do note: not "wavy" furniture as in the water element but furnitures that are `suppose' not to give off poision arrows from it's edges. I also agree with this. This is equally acceptable as most of us do read about poision arrows from nearly every FS website to nearly every FS books. You can consider the use of Feng Shui dimensions as `secondary' importance to Feng Shui. In fact, today, because of commercialisation of Feng Shui so little has been paid to Feng Shui dimensions i.e. what can you earn from teaching FS dimensions? When we do research at Geomancy.net, we believe as far as possible to bring up two sides of the coin and let users be the judge for themselves. No hidden agenda on this. One interesting point: In Singapore, it is a little known fact that the main doors of practically all Housing Development Board Flats which more than 90% of Singaporeans are living have the main door dimensions that fit Feng Shui dimensions. Most FS Masters do talk about the importance of the `mouth' of the house i.e. the main entrance door. As mentioned above, this is considered a `little known fact' because of the racial diversity in Singapore. Say for a company the element of the person running the company is water, then their wealth is fire, thus sharp shaped objects such as triangle is good shape for it.   6. Dear Iz, Thank you for your words of encouragements. Presently, Feng Shui is no longer so mysterious. Sometimes, I go abit far to `warn users' not to go excessively into Feng Shui. Well sometimes this is human nature. For example, say someone pick up a book on Feng Shui and after reading between the lines, find that an author says that wind chimes are good. Here, the `catalyst' begins. Each of us mean well for our family and instead of purchasing one wind chime, may tend to purchase more. If one is purchasing only one wind chime, the chances of getting it placed at a Flying Star inauspicious location is not as great as one buying 5 wind chimes and as there are 8 sectors, the chances of getting into problems are great! Green Roof: When I first started to learn Feng Shui, a successful engineering friend of my told me the story that his clay roof (orange/red) was covered in greenish algae. His parents decided to clean the roof and give it the original orange / red tiles. He related that overall, their house is in a good Shapes and Form and the additional green material on the roof provided added good luck. After they cleaned the roof, coincidentally, the luck declined. Overall, it is safe to have green roofs. This implies the wood element. However, in Feng Shui under the Shapes and Form School an expert Feng Shui Master will look at e.g. the house in relation to others and see what element your house is in relation to the neighbourhood. For example, a short while ago, I made some comments on the Feng Shui of office buildings. In my city, some foreign Feng Shui Masters advised their clients to built tall buildings in a specific shape. For example, if there are lots of offices classified as wooden structures, they usually advise their clients to build e.g. a fire building to destroy the wooden thus creating wealth. The Bank of China in Hong Kong is a well known case and the building comprises two elements. It is mean to subdue other nearby buildings and thus create `wealth'. This is one example of how the Five elements is used in relation to houses or buildings. One useful book I always recommend to understand the Five Elements concept is a book by Derek Walters called " Feng Shui Handbook ". He has another book called Feng Shui. If you compare his book with others available you will notice that he truly understands and practise Feng Shui which is based on the Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. Not unlike some new books written even by famous authors who are in my opinon is very poor in their knowledge and the application of the Five Elements. Such authors I feel, give false hope and I personally feel do more harm than good to anyone. Some of these authors are best at only coming up with general books and the safer books are on the Shapes and Forms. (First Destiny) - Here we can find out the omens of our Heaven `Luck' and understand it better. 2. Luck.... 3. Feng Shui - Is to look at our Earth `Luck'. By doing 3, you can do something about your Earth Luck. While the Heaven Luck, you can understand it better and in someways `avoid' certain inauspiciousness and take advantage of auspicious periods.   8. Dear Iz, There are quite alot of controversies in relation to wind chimes today is because of the following:- 1. Some Feng Shui practioners after auditing a house (most likely want to earn more income) ask the household to purchase quite alot of windchimes. Some `victims' fall prey and hang more than 3 or more wind chimes. 2. Recently there are many books on Feng Shui and without understanding further, many think that wind chimes are universally considered Feng Shui enhancers. From the above, you can understand why many who place more than one wind chime get into problems. As one place a few wind chimes without proper knowledge, the chances are it may be placed in a bad or inauspicious Flying Star location. For a wind chime, it is best to avoid:- 1. Wind chimes with five tines or rods. Five under the Flying Star is unasupicous. Placing a wind chime with five rods at the wrong location spells trouble especially if it is an inauspicous location of the Flying Star. Particularly if there is a star 5 present in the location. 2. Avoid wind chimes with hollow rods. 3. Hanging five or more wind chimes at a particular location can be quite `risky'. It may result in someone in the family getting a mental illness. 4. Hanging windchimes opposite a yin location e.g. facing a graveyard or a location with yin concentration: For example, the location is West plus in addition of having quite alot of trees planted there. Too many trees create too yin an environment. If there is also too much water in the location, too much water is also considered Yin. Here, if you are not careful, hanging a wind chime e.g. on a tree may inadvertently attract playful imps to the location due to the sound of the wind chime. In such a situation, one may not have a peaceful sleep and most likely have nightmares. The above `obsession' with wind chimes may lead to problems as mentioned above. What about placing a single wind chime? Many people have never heard of Feng Shui and do see a wind chime, buy it and hang it at a location they like. There is nothing wrong in this. Most of all, we do rely on our instinctions or six sense. Without relying on Feng Shui, we thus use our personal `feelings' and naturally (most of the time) we do not encounter problems such as above. Sometimes, it is better off not knowing a little of Feng Shui. This is because, nowadays, many of us simply pick up a Feng Shui book, read in between the lines and then immediately start to interpret what was said e.g. wind chimes are good enhancers and start to buy not one but a few. This is where all the trouble begin. Even when we eat, do we try to over eat? We should eat moderately. This is the same with Feng Shui. In your case, if you have not done a Flying Star analysis, you can:- 1. Do not use any wind chime with 5 rods. 2. You can try to place the wind chime as mentioned under a garden arch. But do monitor the situation. Usually this is acceptable because the impact of a wind chime is not as bad as having a few around the house. Usually, based on our six sense (without relying on Feng Shui) is good enough. Since you are moving house, where possible, my advise is not to clutter the centre-point of the house. At the same time, never place any fish tank at the centre of the house. So far, I have known a few instances where: the male of the house gets into financial difficulties and the female of the house gets sick and if prolonged placement of the fish tank, may be fatal.   9. Dear Jason, I personally feel that in `this line' i.e. Feng Shui, whoever comes up with a product to sell should provide some justification in doing so. Likewise, when we reply to a question, usually, it would be best to provide the reason for doing so. You have asked a good question because it is not adviseable for any individual particularly like you have mentioned a weak wood person to be in contact with the coins. (As Metal Destroy's Wood). Currently, there is no basis for anyone to carry six -iching coins around in Feng Shui. I feel that it is more a marketing tool than a Feng Shui enhancement. Perhaps carrying a rabbit's foot can give one equal luck? The real idea behind Feng Shui is more to locate beneificial Qi and to negate Sha Qi. Lets take a look at this Chinese statement:- " Chinese value Destiny so highly that it is the FIRST in ORDER of their TOP priorities, SECOND: Luck and THIRD: Feng Shui. " Here you will notice that contrary to our expectations and beliefs, LUCK is `on it's own ' and not directly associated to Feng Shui. Therefore, what you have mentioned is more of Personal Beliefs than Feng Shui. The Four Symbolic Animals Theory concept; This would depend on the gradient of your land and if there are any `tall buildings' around. If there are tall buidlings around that shade that side of the house or land, then you have to find out what type of plants that you can plant there. Normally, the advice is to plant plants at the East (Rising sun) or the Dragon side and because of the `heat' in the West (afternoon sun), this is less ideal especially in Equatorial countries. Most plants may die due to the intense heat. 2. The Yin and Yang Concept Another point is that under the Four Symbolic Animals Concept for example, the West is said to be Yin and for a landed property or even highrise, it is best not to plant too many plants or trees at this location which may create too yin an environment which is conducive to `spirits'. For the garden, it should have a balance of Yang e.g. stones, bricks etc.. and Yin e.g. plants and water position. 3. You can Ba Gua template or plan an " S " shaped garden. What this means is that garden should be landscaped and avoid straight paths where necessary. Straight paths creates Sha Qi. 4. A lovely garden is conducive to birds. Birds in the garden is very auspicious. In general flowers of any colours are attractive and pleasing. If they smell, nice, it is even better. As `cut-flowers' do not last long, it is acceptable to be placed in the home. It does not `attract' qi but do give one a sense of `calm' etc... This is because if two doors are facing each other, it signifies that each occupants of either room will not be in good terms with each other. Early this year, one user wrote in to say that his main entrance door faces directly his neighbours and something like one metre between them. He mentioned that they are frequently at logger heads. If one is new to Feng Shui and having read some of her books, would quickly come to the conclusion that Feng Shui uses `fixed' templates. For example, many people after reading her books thought that all Feng Shui is based on Fixed stations of the Eight Aspirations or Life Aspirations. In the last 6 months, many novice Feng Shui users after reading such books, go into Fast Food Feng Shui and started to place wind chimes, enhancing their " Romance " corners. Feng Shui is far from this. Real authentic Feng Shui is more importantly based on:- 1. Shapes and Form 2. Compass Schools: Both Eight House and Flying Star 3. The Five Elements relationship e.g. the element and its strength. Nowadays, authors who seem to `preach' Fast Food Feng Shui can do more harm than good to a person. We constantly ask ourselve, if everything is fixed, can it apply to individuals? For example, if everyone of your office colleagues start to place a rose at the `Romance' corner, enhance the North or Career sector or South = Fame sector can this work for all? I would recommend that you read instead Derek Walters " Feng Shui Hand book " with some important topics on the Five Elements. The way to go is to understand equally the Yin and Yang Principle and the Five Elements concept. These are stepping stones to understanding real Feng Shui. All your questions below refers more to the " Life Aspirations or Eight Aspirations ". As mentioned above, these are too general a theory to follow in real Feng Shui. I personally feel that you are better off, using your personal instincts than to follow such a static theory. This static theory can be `followed' after you have done all other Feng Shui analysis. Although this is not as bad as offending the Tai Shu which is at the East this year, the West is called the 3 killings. If you really want to, you can still repaint the West. If you are not in a hurry, perhaps, you can do it after the next Chinese New Year. 2. The House is considered overall as a Metal House. In such a situation, it has not much impact on your Strong Earth. If not, in general, you should avoid painting the front door pink, red or purple or any of the range of such colours. Here there are two caution:- 1. Pink, Red or purple are of the Fire Element and is no good for your Strong Earth. 2. Fire element also destroys Metal element. Here, it would also have to depend on the type of Flying Stars at the location. Fire may inadvertently weaken the Metal element i.e. the Main Entrance door position. The best colours at this point in time, is to paint the wall at the main entrance: White (Metal element) or Light Green. (Green represents Wood and it is good as it will weaken your Strong Earth making it more `neutral'. But I still feel white would be best for a West door location. The ideal door is for you to use natural wood colours e.g. varnished wood door or brown coloured door.   17. Dear Felicia, In this situation, we can apply the Yin and Yang Principle. Under the Yin and Yang Principle, grave sites and the Church are considered " Yin ". In such a situation, you need to counteract this with Yang element. What you can do here is:- 1. If your house has brick walls, natural red brick walls are ideal. Red is the most Yang of all the colours. 2. If the walls are plastered and smoothed, you can paint this side of the wall red or any other Yang colours e.g. bright green, bright blue etc... 3. For the window frame, you should also paint it in matching bright colours. 4. Avoid too many trees particularly large ones as this can harbour the `spirits'. Please also avoid too many plants. Keep this location trimmed. 5. Where possible use bright coloured curtains e.g. with a dash of red in it. (If you can). But be careful, try not to make the rooms here dark. Best to let be `bright.' If you notice above, what we are trying to create is to increase as much Yang energy on this side of the house to offset the negative Yin energy of the grave site and the Church. If you have a family, it is best to look at your `weak earth' in relation to your spouse. For example, if your spouse is a Strong Wood person, as Wood destroys Earth, you need more of `earth' element then if she is of another element or a weaker strength. What happens if your spouse is a Strong Fire element. As Firer enhances Earth, this is a good relationship. Alternatively if your spouse is a Earth person, you can benefit by her Earth element. What I mean here is that in your home and if you are married, you have to take into consideration, your partner's element and strength in order to find something that both can benefit from. Sometimes, an enhance for you i.e. Weak Earth may without proper consideration for your spouse, be detriment for her. 2. If you are not married, this is ok. You still need to consider where is the main entrance of the house. (Avoid purchasing any fountains with pointed edges, rounded edges are the best). 2. Avoid placing any rocks that symbolises a creature or some unknown shape resembling a person, an animal etc.. 3. Avoid having an animal or fish or any other objects with their `mouth' open facing the house. This will create problems for the breadwinner as a hungry mouth symbolizes a need to feed it. This may bring illness or loss of fortune to the household. 4. A fountain should not be `cluttered' with figurines and ideally, and has a clean shape. 5. Most of us have read and heard about the `ill effects' of the White Tiger. Contrary to popular belief that it is a `bad' animal, it is equally considered auspicious animal as it is courageous and even considered a beautiful animal. Here, you will notice it it is really no harm and we do not really need to `tame' the animal or provide a quiet environment. The only situations to watch out are:- 1. In the natural order, the green dragon and tiger is said to embrace each other. This is where the higher green dragon hill embraces the lower tiger hill. As the West is a Yin location, avoid planting too many plants. Too many plants create a Yin environment. Too yin environment is no good. 3. Dear Dion, What is common with the Compass School of Feng Shui i.e. the Eight House and the Flying Star and if we map our Heaven Luck using Pillars of Destiny are that they have to be personalized to an individual. For the Shapes and Form School, it is more generalised Feng Shui. The Eight Aspirations or Life Aspirations is a " free for all ". Anyone can write a book about it and say that the romance corner is at the South West while the Career is in the North. So, you will realise that if you are considering compass directions e.g. North, you should look at it under the Eight House Theory or the Flying Star Theory. Even in the Four Symbolic Animals Principle, it does not say that the back door facing North is bad. Under this theory, a water position behind the house is bad. It does not also imply that a backdoor at the North is bed. The only thing I like to relate about the North is that it is common in Europe or the West to consider North inauspcious. The reason is because most churches lie North to South and in the bible, it was mentioned (somewhere) that the North is the home of the devil. When rites are performed, priests usually face the South. This has also to do with the Northern lights and the ozone problem in the north. In addition, the Chinese consider North East, the devil's gate. Which is close to the North. Well, you should not worry too much about the North. What you need to do is at the North and North East sector, avoid planting too many trees. I know wells are uncommon nowadays, but wells at the North, NE and SW are usually avoided. The reason is to avoid creating a yin environment (too many trees or too much water) at these locations. If you do not have the above, it is fine.
