Dear Alice, In my Applied Feng Shui book, I had listed 3 methods of manually calculating the Gua (Kua) numbers. The reason why 5 is treated as 8 and 2 has to do with the rationale that it occupies the centre position which is the earth element. Thus under the Flying Star Feng Shui, this is why we have what is known as the #5 or Yellow earth (centre quadrant). Under the symbolic animal concept this yellow is represented by a Yellow snake. Under the Pa Che Compass School or Eight House or Flying Star Feng Shui:- 1 = Gua 1 (North) 2 = Gua 2 (South-West) 3 = Gua 3 (East) 4 = Gua 4 (South-East) 5 = Center Square (If male then the number = 2) (If female then the number = 8) 5 is a "transit" point and does not belong to any compass direction other than the centrepoint. 6 = Gua 6 (North-West) 7 = Gua 7 (West) 8 = Gua 8 (North-East) 9 = Gua 9 (South) Thus, in one of the formulas:- For the male ============ 1. Take the year of birth. 2. Subtract the last two digits of year of birth with 100. 3. Divide this value by 9 4. If the remainder is 5, for a male, then the gua is 2. For the female ============== 5. On the issue of a double-decker bed. In the past, I had posted a message that in my opinion, there is no issue with a double-decker bed. The "misunderstand" arose because some FS practitioners claim that sleeping under a double-decker bed is no good. As it acts like a beam. But, let us look at it logically: 1. double-decker beds was not just invented this year or the last. It has been around for many, many years. In fact, I also sleep under one 40 years ago. 2. many people, even scholars have slept under one, such as when they lived in a hostle. 3. Dear Alice, This is based on the Water Classics which states that: 1. Yin water is where water at the frontage of a home flows from right to left of a home. 2. Yang water is where water at the frontage of a home flows from left to right. Here, water can be in the form of natural water, roads, drains etc.... Dear Alice, 1. Since, I envisage that there will be more questions on this issue: Is it better to remain a Period 7 or to change to a Period 8 home. 2. The D.I.Y. "Expert" The steps below are based on the belief that: the user wants to do-it-on-their own (D.I.Y.). If so, make sure that one has a good grounding in Flying Star Feng Shui. 3. If one is a novice in Flying Star Feng Shui If the person is only a novice, than, it is best to seek advise from a FS practitioner - requesting the steps (below) to be incorporated in your home audit - if it has not been done already. 4. Here are some of the considerations which applies not only to the "West" but rather all other directions:- 4.1 Step 1: Draw Flying Star Charts ==================================== 4.2 For example if your home is a "West" Home. The least one can do is to draw at least TWO CHARTS. 4.3 And if your home is a WEST 1 home, than, try to draw and later analyse your home based on Period 7's West 1 or Period 8's West 1. 4.4 If one's home was/is a Period 6's WEST 1, than, no point drawing a Period 7's chart since it has past it's shelf-date. Draw a Period 8 WEST 1 chart. 4.5 Step 2: Analyse which chart is better? ========================================== 4.6 Check the Flying star numbers of a facing direction. 4.7 Usually, if the frontage is afflicted by or has some of these numbers: #5 , #2 , #7 or #3 (usually in a combination be it MS, WS or Base) - then this home is a candidate for a change in period - especially if all other sectors are equally not as favourable. 4.8 Equally important is the centrepoint of the home. For the West 1 home the centrepoint is plagued by an inauspicious 5MS 9WS with Base7 combination. Given that this year, the 5 yellow is at the centerpoint or the flux of the home, it is not so favourable. 4.9 If Period 8's chart has double #8's at the frontage, chances are, it is better to fly to Period 8, since this house should have overall better Flying Star Feng Shui. 4.10 In addition to comparing the "mouth" or frontage of the home, the centrepoint, it is also equally important to compare the flying star for each bedroom(s) and even the sitting position or back of the home. 4.11 Like exams, we want to score as much marks as possible. And if the new Period 8 chart is much better in all compartments, why not. 5. Step 3: Cannot "catch" (comprehen) what I say ================================================ 5.1 For those who cannot "catch" (comprehen) what I say, should again, see whether it is better to get a competent FS practitioner to an extensive assessment. Else, read on.... 5.2 Step 4: Check if it is possible to activate the MS#8 and especially the water star WS#8 ================================== 5.3 No matter under which Period, since we are under Period 8, check to see where is the water star #8 position. 5.4 If your home is a Period 7 home and if the water star is located at the frontage, then, it may be justifiable to consider maintaining it a Period 7 home (after considering also Step 2 and other relevant information above. 5.5 This is because, sometimes, under Period 8, even if we have a double #8's it may fly into the wrong place. For example, under Period 8 West 1, there is a double #8's but it flew to the sitting position. 5.6 In many homes, the sitting position is the back of the home and unless, one has a living room, here, one cannot take proper advantage of the double #8's. 5.7 Step 5: Can the door be tilted to another direction ======================================================= 5.8 This involves, more expert analysis. So, one should seriously consider getting proper FS advise. 5.9 For example, a North 2 Period 7 home is not advantages to move into Period 8 North 2. Since North 2, Period 7 has double 7's but is not favourable under Period 8, because of the inaspicious double 7's. Water can be used to drown it. 5.10 But is there a better choice? 5.11 Yes, if it is feasible to tilt the main door to North 1, Period 8, this is excellent because, the house would enjoy double 8's at the frontage. 5.12 Step 6: Go ahead to check out your home based on the above advise 5.13 Unfortunately for those who are groggy by now, and trying to find your asprin (panadol) then, better not look at all these information. 6. In conclusion ================ For "copycat" questions, like this: "Would appreciate if you could advise how Period 8 will affect a house facing XXXX?" Dear Mei Lee, Generally, it has more to do with "commonsense approach" to Feng Shui. This is because, if the site / slope is "well maintained" it is fine. But in some cases, such as poor piling done and due to heavy (or very heavy rainfall), and if the slope is not protected, we often see pictures on houses on the "hill" breaking up or the slope causing a landslide - coming down to the lower home. Dear Regina, To side-track a little:- 1. The annual Five The annual #5 falls at the centrepoint of a home. If so, often, leaving it as a "clear space" or walkway is good enough. For those who are duly concerned with it. The rationale is that it would be quite silly to place e.g. a wind chime at this centrepoint. Since, either, most of the time - a regular wind chime, would not chime as much. Even if it does chime, in a home environment, it can get pretty uncomfortable - since - it can affect the welfare of family members e.g. those who need to study or pay attention to work or for sleep. 2. These three variable numbers are not favourable: since #3 affects work or work issues and #2 with #5 often reflect sickness. 3. However, before you start to "panic" or do anything, do check the annual number at this sector. Dear Nhan, 1. In my opinion, no. One should not only consider specifically the base #8 as an active star. 2. This is because, some FS schools have even "sidelined" the base number. And some of the FS schools placed emphasis on the MS # and WS #. 3. I feel that all three variables: Base, MS and WS are equally important. And also because under Period 7, #4 is bad number. 4. But, under Period 8, it is felt that it is a "mixed-blessing" star. Some FS practitioners feel that #4 is a good star. While others like me, would say that it is a "mixed blessing". 5. This is because, central to Flying Star Feng Shui is what is known as the 81 interpretations. This is the permutation of 1 with 1, 1 with 2..... 2 with 1 up to 9 with 1... 9 with 9. A total of 81 different combinations. 6. In addition, often many FS practitioners understand relations like MS#1 with WS#4 etc... 7. In history, we understand that even so called "dead" volcanoes may erupt at anytime. 8. And using the term "dead" is similar to a one-dimension look at the numbers. 9. If we understand the Flying Star numerology, correctly, some people may view it from a two-dimension view. But, the highest state of understanding is that is actually a three-dimensional model encomphasing: Five Elements concept, 81 combinations, Flying star rulesets e.g. Pearl String, Sum-of-ten, Up mountain, down water etc.... 10. Therefore, in a 20-Year Flying Star analysis, even if a number or number(s) are dead, they are still combined in a Base / Mountain / water star group to derive the influence of a sector. 11. Dear Anon, It depends: 1. Where possible, there should be ONLY 1 water position. And this water position (real water) should only be activated according to the Flying Star Feng Shui. For example, a period 7 house has a double #7. And water is used here to activate it for `wealth' under Period 7 etc... 2. Often if there are more than 2 water positions e.g. fish tank measuring 4 ft by 2 ft, is pretty significant and thus not ideal to have more of it.... 3. For a Strong water person, in some instances, it is preferred if the water position is at the balcony area (outside the living area of the home). 4. It also depends on the decor of the home. For example, for a strong water person:- 4.1 His good individual colours are: 1. wood element 2. fire element and earth element. (Fire element is his wealth element). 4.2 If his home has much of colours associated with Wealth = fire and or wood element, then, this is better, since it would help to neutralise further imbalances. 5. For the water position, e.g. a water feature, try to activate it with all five elements. Please check my previous message or SEARCH for arowana on how to activate a five element water feature. Dear Carlos, Wow! Double #5's are bad enough (Misfortune/sickness x 2). But with the addition of #9 (strong fire), this is a "potent" inauspicious combination. Since strong fire further fuels strong earth #5 x2. If you can, usually, a set of wind chime could be used outside the bedroom e.g. window area to dissipate this three combined inauspicious combination. In addition, it is best to use metal cure inside this room to further negate the bad sector. Try to avoid: Check the room for presence of Earth element i.e. earth tones e.g. cream, beige or yellow. And further avoid any Fire (red, pink or purple) colour in the room. The most common is to check that the walls are not this colour, curtains and bedsheet. Warmest Regards, Cecil

Dear Cecil, After browsing many many feng shui sites, I came to one conclusion: your site is the most sensible, reasonable and helpful one of all. I've been to sites where they want to sell you just about anything and everything. The information they are willing to give is so trivial and one senses that the only thing they are interested in is to make money and sell you products that might and might not fit in with your decor or your culture, and of course doesn't serve the purpose of curing and or enhancing. Sorry for the long message, but I have a friend who spent a fortune buying all types of figurines to cure then to enhance and then eventually all she got was more figures on her credit card and no luck! I believe that what one should do is get your advise first because it makes so much sense and it is always sincere. For the pie chart, you can check this old resource: http://www.geomancy.net/fs/house1.htm If you are applying Flying Star Feng Shui, then, it is best to check the 20 Year Flying Star chart for that sector, plus the annual star at the sector. For example, if the annual star has #2 or #5 or the 20 Year star chart has any of these, it may not be a good idea to add red to this sector. Since fire may further fuel bad earth #2 or #5. For example, for the Chinese; YANG FENG SHUI:- =============== 1. once a new child is born, many parents or grand parents go to a geomancer to select a favourable name for the child. 2. services like: auspicious dates for marriage etc.. face reading, hand reading, Chinese astrology 3. Home feng shui comes in when one starts a family or simply owns a home. YIN FENG SHUI:- ============== 4. Because of scarcity of land, nowadays, loved ones are cremated. In the past, Geomancers are also involved in selection of burial sites etc.... Dear Anooja, Please see below:- Apologies, don't really quite understand your question. The two "secrets" of Flying Star Feng Shui are: 1. Activating the water position or water star for the period. Under period 6, the water star is #6. Under period 7, the water star is #7. Under period 8, the water star is #8. Here, it is said that activating water star under Flying Star is equvalent of what is called the "wealth position". As it says, it helps to improve on wealth $$$$. 2. Activating the mountain star(s). On the same note, Under Period 8, activating the mountain star with a solid object at a location that can support a mountain star i.e. Under period 8, activating #8 mountain star or base star #8 would help to activate relationship and health luck. Here, as mentioned above, the sector to activate a mountain star should be e.g. the back of the home or a room etc... It is silly to activate a mountain star at the main entrance. Who would want to e.g. place a rock above the main door? Under shapes and forms feng shui, it is like putting a mountain at the front of the house. (Pretty silly idea). On a commonsense approach, placing on the main door may not be good. Because of gravity, one day, it may just fall down and hit family member's head. For those who are in no good terms with their mother-in-law, could pray hard that it falls on her:( The morale of the story is that even if a water star or mountain star is found in a home, it may not necessarily be applicable. Dear Regina, Thanks for taking the effort to post a picture:) I just have to open the picture file and do a quick scan of your message. This has a higher chance of getting a reply! Often, such a corner has a small "poison arrow" foot print. Looks like, this is a minor issue IF: 1. Your sofa or sitting position is not directly at this "point" (currenly masked by the plant). 2. Even if so, such a corner does not have the type of sha qi force of a corner home aimed at e.g. one's home. 3. For such a corner, in my opinion, the sha qi is minor: if the corner is entirely made of concrete, the impact zone is approximately 1 metre or less. If the corner is made of wood, I would place the sha qi as 2 feet or less. 4. So, it seems that your sofa or someone sitting close to it has already past this safety zone. I believe, the impact is up to the brick raised platform. 5. To determine whether a plant can be at this location or not, often, from a Shapes and Forms perspective, it is OK. (No harm to place one there). If the consideration is under Flying Star Feng Shui, then if the sector has one or more #3 or #4, then, it may not be necessarily good to place a plant there. Dear Lee Seng, Frankly, it is better if you have simple sketch rather than all descriptive words to eliminate mis-interpretation and the need to aborb too many lines. Futhermore, a picture, tells a thousand words. Generally, for a kitchen located at the South compass direction of a home, here, the stove can face the fridge. Since south has the element of fire. But if the kitchen is at the North compass direction, or NE direction, than preferably, the stove should not "see" the fridge. Please see below:- This is OK. For family's health, it is often arranged to suit the ba zi of the wife. This two can share the same wall but avoid having the fridge right in the middle of the toilet sink and the stove. Further to what I had mentioned, this message should easily be digested by majority of Singapore Chinese (Hokkien being the largest Chinese community. And Teochews can also easily understand this message). If you sent it to a Taiwanese friend, this is often OK. Because majority of Taiwanese are Hokkiens or have grown up with this language.
